When Thida Aubade is twelve, she speaks four languages fluently, and can stumble her way through a lot more.

(Several of the adults in her life take this as a cue to get her evaluated by nearby wizards for apprenticeship quality, but the answer is a resounding no-- she's terrible at math, worse at shape rotation, and hates doing tasks that involve sitting still and not talking to anyone. The wizards are a little puzzled by this, because being good at linguistics is normally a pretty strong correlate for the wizard skillset, but, well, they're not actually the same thing and she very clearly has the one and not the other. So, no wizard training.)

She spends most of her time at the temple of Sarenrae in Diobel, where her elder brother works.

Masi is not an empowered priest, of course; most people who work at a temple aren't. He does counselling: mostly locals, most days, but it's a port city, so his main speciality, helping people untangle culture collisions, comes up pretty often. He can say hello, thank you, have a nice day, and the key critical I think there may have been a misunderstanding, in a vast number of ways, but basically nothing else.

Thida on the other hand will happily befriend any and everyone if they'll teach her new vocabulary, and accordingly as soon as they'll let her she spends a lot of her time following her brother around, translating.

This is mostly a fairly localized activity, but every so often Masi gets an assignment to provide diplomatic wise counsel to some merchant guild dispute or another, which involves travelling up to Absalom with a caravan. Sometimes he takes his little sister with him on those trips, ostensibly on grounds that of course she is too young to be left home alone; it's a little bit actually that, and a little bit because her translation services are genuinely useful, but it is really mostly because the vast majority of people who have a dumb interpersonal disagreement have a pretty hard time not being nicer to each other when a small child with a holy symbol tells them very earnestly that she's sure that those other people aren't being mean on purpose, people are usually doing that by accident, could they pretty please sit down with her for tea and try to talk about it?

This is why she's with him, when he dies.

The road from Diobel to Absalom is not, as roads go, a particularly dangerous one. But it is a road, on the planet Golarion, and so the bar is, shall we say, not high.

It's not even anything that exciting. It doesn't have to be, when you're ordinary merchants. It just has to be slightly bigger than the guards, who are mostly young men who couldn't get good apprenticeships and who in other cultures would end up foot soldiers but on the Isle of Kortos (ruled by Absalom, which maintains no standing army per se) can't and don't.

Or more numerous, as in this case.

Billie was told they were going to go fight the people that keep taking their stuff. This seemed very reasonable to him. He has his claws and his cool trick that he learned out of that one book they found mostly disintegrated in a wolf that one time and he is so ready to DEFEND the TRIBE wait hang on those people weren't doing anything? They were just minding their own business? He has concerns?

aaaaaaa aaaaaa kobolds are not very big compared to an ADULT PERSON but they are NOT A LOT SMALLER THAN HER and QUITE SHARP

AAAAAAAAAAAA HIS BABY SISTER IS ALL THE WAY OVER THERE

Ignoring a dozen attacks of opportunity at a sprint is not an incredible way to not get stabbed and Masi does not have class levels. He is on the ground now.

"What is wrong with all of you??????"

(Billie is yelling in Draconic, and is thus incomprehensible to all human participants in this combat except Thida. He is, however, now standing between her and the next nearest kobold, teeth bared.)

Kobolds were not prepared to win this fight without their wizard.

They leave.

"oh my gosh, thank you," says Thida, in Draconic, while she's scrambling towards her brother, who is bleeding more than humans ideally should.

If this were an adventuring party, it would have someone who could cast stabilize.

It's not, though.

Masi Aubade's most prized possession is a sunwheel, inherited from his grandmother.

He presses it into the brave little kobold's hands. "Keep her safe for me," he says.

She can translate, if a little wobblingly.

!! A heroic divine quest ??

This is a fervently nodding kobold, holding the most precious object.

Okay. That's all right then. "See you in Nirvana, yeah?"

The merchants wish to object that that is a MONSTER why are you talking to one of the MONSTERS we gotta KILL IT before it HURTS YOU, kiddo-

You what now.

Absolutely the fuck you will not.
