SETBACK ON WESTERN FRONT: Third Army Withdraws From Renton Plateau

With enemy forces encroaching under the command of the infamous Marshal Laurent, our Third Army withdrew from the Renton Plateau in order to prevent a potential encirclement following further enemy gains at Renton Falls. A gallant delaying action by brave troops of the Sixth Rifles allowed the bulk of our army to withdraw in good order, preserving much of our force's strength. With these latest developments, the enemy has managed to temporarily reverse our territorial gains, and may even have the hubris to seek to push into Westerline territory. However, the Third Army's successful escape has denied Marshal Laurent the decisive victory he sought after last month's breakthroughs and preserved our troop strength for our upcoming Summer Offensive.

ENEMY AT THE GATES: Scouts report enemy forces amassing outside Western border defenses. Defense Ministry urges calm.

Intelligence reports from our brave Westerline Rangers indicate that Marshal Laurent's forces are indeed amassing for a potential assault on the Western border fortresses. But Laurent's fearsome reputation may prove to be unwarranted here -- his skill at maneuvering forces in the field and the ruses and deceptions that characterize his dishonorable style of combat may prove in vain when he is forced to come to blows with troops entrenched in modern fortifications. Indeed, the Defense Ministry has urged that citizens of the Western Provinces remain calm -- if Laurent does attack, it may be a golden opportunity to inflict losses on the enemy from a position of substantial advantage, weakening them before we strike back with an attack of our own.

SIEGE CONTINUES: Our Defenders Hold the Line!

Another set of enemy attacks have been repulsed in the last week at our Western border. Marshal Laurent's reputation for rapid success is quickly waning as weeks go by with no meaningful gains for his besiegers. Our border defenders suffered minimal casualties in the latest attacks and destroyed many enemy assault vehicles! Laurent's defeated troops left only corpses and smoldering wrecks behind as they withdrew back to their lines in disarray. A Star of Valor will be rewarded to Corporal Hercule Alexander of the Fifth Border Rangers, who personally disabled three armored vehicles armed only with his rifle and a quiver of rifle grenades! This hero's tactics are now being spread to the rest of our forces, promising more pain for the enemy should they mount another assault.

BREAKTHROUGH! Enemy assault engineers breach border defenses in terrifying dawn attack!

A terrifying scene took place this morning as a new wave of enemy assault vehicles and engineers with breaching equipment assaulted our Western border defenses. While our troops were holding the enemy back at first, many of the vehicles thought disabled and abandoned over the last week's attacks roared into life, providing new impetus to the enemy charge. Our defenders fought bravely but were unable to hold back the tide, and the border defenses have been breached in several sectors. Speaking for the Defense Ministry, Colonel Burton urged calm, saying that while this was a setback the primary defensive redoubts still hold and will be able to prevent incursions through the Western mountain passes.

GARRISON HOLDS ON: Encircled border defenders fight to hold last bastions.

Transmissions from the border siege indicate our brave defenders continue to hold out in the central bastions, but the situation is increasingly grim. The outer workings have been taken by the enemy, who have now fully encircled the remaining redoubts. Our logistical lines are cut and enemy siege engineers have brought up ground-to-air weapons to prevent aerial resupply. That said, our troops remain grimly determined to hold out in the face of this siege. Food and ammunition supplies are adequate, and our men and women -- knowing they are all that prevents Marshal Laurent's forces from controlling the Western mountain passes -- fight with undaunted vigor.

RELIEF FORCE EMBARKS. Troops set forth to rescue surrounded border defenders.

With the border siege continuing, the Defense Ministry announced today that timetables for the Summer Offensive have been expedited and our forces are mobilizing to break the siege of the border garrison. Great fanfare accompanied the departure of our brave troops with the public cheering on the relief column as it marched through the streets -- other forces have also been dispatched and will soon arrive to force the enemy out of the outer defenses, bringing relief to the brave defenders still holding the line. This promises to open a new chapter in the war -- once the border defenses are cleared, we will be able to push outward across the border to the Renton Plateau, once again forcing our opponents onto the defensive.

BATTLE AT THE BORDER: Relief force engages besiegers!

Battle was joined last evening as our relief column attacked hostile forces at the border fortifications. War correspondents reported high morale among our forces as our fighting men and women prepared for battle yesterday afternoon. Riflemen equipped with our latest weapons and wargear checked their equipment as they awaited boarding their transports with the attack order. Heavy artillery was set up to fire on the enemy positions in preparation for a lightning assault. As the assault vehicles began to roll out, our correspondents heard the artillery begin its bombardment. Speaking for the Defense Ministry, Colonel Burton stated that this battle promises to break the enemy lines open and begin a new push into hostile lands.

EXTRA: AERIAL INVASION! NORTHWESTERN PROVINCES ENDANGERED! OUR HOMELAND AT WAR!

In a tragic day for Westerline, the enemy mounted a surprise assault with aerial transports flying across the northwestern mountains and disgorging hordes of hostile soldiers via parachutes similar to those used by aircraft and airship crews, hence circumventing the border siege altogether. These invaders rallied quickly and were able to rapidly gain ground in the northwest, an area thought impervious to invasion until now. Rapid evacuations have been ordered and national militia is being called up to respond to the coming threat. Turn to page four for a list of townships currently under evacuation, and to page five for a list of those reserve units now being deployed.

BORDER RELIEF FORCE REDIRECTED TO RESPOND TO INVASION

Despite initial gains in yesterday's battle with Marshal Laurent's besiegers, much of the border relief column has been retasked with replying to the northwestern invasion. If the enemy successfully captures the aerodromes at Velkei Heights, they will be able to resupply their airborne force; if we can cut them off from doing so, we can potentially end the threat to the Northwest, then refocus on the border siege. Some of the border relief force will remain in position to consolidate yesterday's gains, but for the time being the border siege may prove a side affair to the new invasion. Our own correspondents will be splitting up, with some at the border siege and others going with the new Northwestern Relief. Turn to page four for an updated evacuation list, and to page five for a list of reserve units now being deployed.

VICTORY IN NORTHWEST! AERIAL INVADERS SURRENDER!

Last evening saw the Northwestern Relief conclude in dramatic victory, as the remaining aerial invaders were encircled outside the Velkei Heights. With the crucial aerodromes out of their reach and Westerline forces surrounding them on all sides, the enemy had no remaining path to victory and was forced to surrender. Thousands of enemy prisoners are even now being marched to secure areas; following this, our force will regroup and proceed to lift the border siege, after which the stage will be set to push out into enemy territory once more.

RELIEF COLUMN PREPARES TO LIFT BORDER SIEGE

With the success of the Northwestern Relief, our forces have reorganized and are on their way back to the border siege. Families are beginning to return to the evacuated townships and the enemy prisoners have been relocated to secure areas. Transmissions from the border redoubts have been limited thanks to hostile jamming, but hopes are high among our forces as they march to battle, elated with victory.

BORDER PASSES IN ENEMY HANDS!

Our special correspondent with the relief column reports:

As our forces approached the border fortifications, fresh from victory in the Northwestern Relief, a chilling quiet became apparent. The ongoing thunder of guns that had so characterized the border siege -- once audible from kilometers away -- had gone silent. Efforts to raise the fortress, already inconsistent thanks to jamming, were unsuccessful. Our commanders ordered a cautious advance, and a scouting party was sent forward to try to establish direct contact. Some permitted themselves to think that the enemy had retreated following the defeat of their aerial invasion, but these hopes were swiftly dashed -- ashen-faced scouts returned to report that enemy flags were flying over the citadel and that hostile forces were already streaming through the mountain pass in substantial numbers.

In light of this development, our forces are withdrawing to secondary positions and preparing to try and contain an enemy invasion.

WE STAND IN DEFIANCE!

With invaders looming from the west, the Westerline Herald sees fit to emphasize that we will not capitulate. Marshal Laurent's barbarians encroach on Westerline territory, threatening to pillage and destroy our land and shackle us under their brutal control. All citizens should be prepared to resist against the invader by whatever means available -- while recent news has been grim, the indomitable fighting spirit of the Westerfolk will carry us through. All of Westerline stands defiant against tyranny. Anyone is welcome to join us -- even now, international volunteers flock to Westerline to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Westerfolk in defense of our common values. We will fight and we will win!

Evening edition, April 23rd:

LAURENT LOOMS - WE FIGHT!

The despicable Marshal Laurent and his horde of invaders continue to push into our homeland. Against them stand thousands upon thousands of defenders of freedom, both Westerfolk and international volunteers. Soon, the invasion will be halted and these oppressors will be brought to justice, but the path to victory will admittedly be hard. The Defense Ministry urged citizens to stand in solidarity with our brave protectors -- even those not on the front lines have an important role to play, both in critical industries supplying the war effort and in conserving key resources, staying watchful against infiltrators, and helping our society run efficiently.

Remember -- our integrated society gives us a crucial advantage over the enemy, who refuses to allow women a place even in civilian war industries. As more and more of our resources are brought to bear, these advantages will give us the victory.
