And then her brain processes his final statement.

"—have We given offence? Our apologies."

"N-noooo, no, I'm not offended!" she says, immediately and very strongly.

"I-I'm just, it's, I'm. I was. Not expecting those words in that order, and if you'd asked me this morning if a man could be part of another man's - harem - let alone a dragon! - I would have thought you were making fun of me, but, that, I."

"I'm just learning some new things, is all!!!!"

"Oh! Yes, 'tis customary in the Jade Empire for the men of the royal line to have harems and since the Prince had a predilection for men, We presented as such. However, Our kind does not have thy kind's sexes, as such. The choice of our presentation when we opt to pass as humans is merely that: a choice."

"I'm sorry, what? The - you - what do. what do dragons have instead of sexes????? What do you do, how do you make there be more little dragons????"

"The method is the same as thy kind's, but we can just decide at the time which of the two is going to be the sire and which is going to be the carrier."

"By. By shapeshifting??? Just pick the one that is to, um..."

"Oh, no. Our natural forms include both, ah, receptive and active parts."

"O-oh," she says, agreeably.

"- so then you all tend to present as men to humans because, we're, uh, well. Weird about women and how much agency they're allowed to have. That makes sense. And I guess explains where all the female dragons are."

He grins. "Indeed. Though thy kind's attempts to explain the observed lack is very amusing."

"Yes, I, yes. I expect so." Probably the dragon knows about the thing where humans absolutely think they steal princesses to use them for - breeding purposes. So she does not have to bring that up. Or think about it again! Hooray for her.

And fortunately for her, she thought that was absolute nonsense anyway, so! All is well, really!!!!

"S-so uh. Harem member for a prince? That wasn't too... constraining for you? Did they try to keep you in a little palace???"

"Oh, yes, but 'twas only a short while. ...for Our kind, that is. We were in the harem for twenty summers."

"Yeah, that's longer than I've been alive," she informs him. Helpfully. Admittedly only by a couple of years, but still. "Was he... aware you were a dragon??"

"We did eventually tell him but—perhaps We should tell the whole tale from the beginning."

"Yes, please!" Food nibble, while absolutely delighted to hear about what even happened there.

"We first met them when We were looking to expand Our Hoard. In the Empire, seeing a dragon fly overhead is considered a sign of good luck. Mere superstition, but it means We are less concerned with being inconspicuous when looking for treasure. And We saw something most curious when passing by one of the imperial estates in the mountains."

"Oh? And what was that? Did your prince have some weird, experimental contraption set up nearby?"

"Yes! He—ah, hast thou ever seen a flying lantern?"

"A... lantern enchanted to fly? That sounds very charming, but no, I haven't seen one before."
