The first day of sophomore year is very like the first day of freshman year, except that Gene knows how much monotony awaits him.  Rules, boring routine, subjects he couldn't care less about, and classmates who're (almost all) no fun to talk with.  But there was no way of getting out of it, so he's here.

Gene sneaks a peek at the student handbook and chuckles just a bit.   At least this isn't quite so monotonous - something must've been off with the printer.

He flips to the first page and checks; nope, the text is all nicely aligned there.  Well, might as well disrupt that.  At the end of the statement of values, he scribbles, "... and boredom to everyone."

One of his classmates, a friendly acquaintance at best, says,

"Careful. Mr. Westover will make you read that to the whole class."

"Read the school handbook aloud?  Yeah right.  Might be more interesting than triangles or whatever."

"...right. Very funny. Put it away before you give him ideas."

Gene smiles carelessly at Matt and leans back pretending to pay attention to the teacher.

A minute later, he flips his handbook closed.

Perhaps boredom is a school value, because Mr. Westover's droning is putting him to sleep.
