so growing up i used to hear stories about how my great-aunt was an esper but they didn't really understand awakenings yet so she didn't make it through hers. and I always just. assumed this was true? not that people never mistake a normal illness for an awakening, but sometimes it's obvious, and there aren't exactly a lot of illnesses that change your eye color, so i figured there was something like that going on. they never mentioned exactly how she died, but that's not so weird, lots of people wouldn't want to talk about it.

anyways. i've been doing some genealogy research on my own time, and i found her obit, and 

friends

she was TWENTY-SIX YEARS OLD

she did not fucking die of awakening when she stepped in front of a moving train

Yikes. Grieving people during times of turmoil will just latch on to an explanation. And given that it was your *great-aunt* 1) This was before people had much information on awakenings, 2) The people who knew about the details just told other people that repeated the story without full context. I definitely do not fact-check every family story against official records. Either way, I hope the people involved are okay.
