Tiefling character in Milliways

Once in a very long while, a door does not lead to where it usually does.

One can cross a door and find themselves, instead, in a large and tastefully decorated tavern of sorts, on the fancy side of things. There is a bar with decorative bottles behind it, but no bartender. There are tables and a few shadowy nooks. There are stairs leading up and a few other side doors. And, off to the right of the entryway, there is a tall set of windows looking out into a black void, full of multicolored points of light blooming, exploding, and fading one after another.

The place is mostly empty, aside from a figure in a trenchcoat sleeping on one of the corner tables, and a woman in some sort of uniform made of thick wool in a vaguely naval cut sitting at the bar, revolver and machete on either side of her hips.

Oh, new patron! She waves cheerfully.

A women waves back cheerfully enough, before looking around and abruptly stopping moving. Deciding that this doesn’t look like an imminent attack, she looks at the women at the bar, keeping track of the machete.

“Dare I ask what is going on?” She casts a spell on herself as she does, rather casually. One might notice that her tone is unusually cheery and even for someone who has walked into an unknown situation in a profession when this may be quite likely to be deadly.

She looks mostly like a human, if one ignores the horns, eyes, and tail. To be fair to an unobservant viewer, the tail isn’t moving at all, wrapped carefully around her leg.

"Milliways one-oh-one: This place steals doors from all sorts of worlds for all sorts of interesting people and if you leave again you'll go home and the door to Milliways will disappear. Time is stopped for your world while you're here, probably. The bar is sentient, she can hear you and talks with napkins and the first drink's free. Violence and nudity are not permitted in the main bar area and security is... Pretty good. Wouldn't advise testing it."

She startles at the words, before nodding along, raising an eyebrow at a few places. “And this is for…entertainment? Of whoever runs this place, somehow powerful enough to stop time indefinitely?” She looks at the bar. “I might need to free drink, but really ought get info first. Mind answering a few questions, testing the translation a bit?” Her lips purse. “I’d really like it to switch languages. It’s very disconcerting, how fluent you seem. Or, rather, how you’re using the words I would most readily translate to.”

"Hmm, try expecting me to use a more comfortable language? The translation is usually polite."

She tries this for a moment, the nods. “Would you mind saying something? I think I’ve got it.”

"Something."

She snorts. “Thanks.” Thinks for a moment, then responds. “What drinks does she have, anyway. Is there a limit to how long one can stay here, or other rules? What counts as violence, because I’m fairly certain that translated weird the first time, and would prefer to figure this out with a minimum of conditionals.” She makes a tch-ing sound that fades of into something like a hiss, almost like a laugh. “My native language is not always the friendliest. It gave me three words, not counting prefixes.”

"Lots of stuff, as long as you have money, and it's pretty intuitive? Come up and ask Bar for the fine details. I'm not a fine details person unless it's about guns."

“Guns?”

Gesture at her revolver on her right hip.

"Explosion bows, if I'm guessing what to reference right?"

….”Like, explosive arrows. Or bows that explode on you? Or, uh, a grenade pouch? I feel as though I must be out in the sticks comparatively, but I think I’m missing something here.”

"More like a crossbow? Crossbows use energy stored in the compression of the armature, guns use energy stored in the chemicals in the gunpowder in a little tube. Steel and gunpowder tamed the Zee and the High Wilderness both, our little patches of it at least."

She looks a bit conflicted at the last sentence.

“Ah.”

She nods a polite acknowledgment, and goes to talk to the bar.

”It is…good to meet you. Might I ask if you would be so kind as to provide other pertinent information, if you hear my last conversation?”

Welcome to Milliways. I also pride myself on providing excellent food and drink recommendations. Would you like anything? As miss Lovejoy has said, the first drink is free.

Reads a napkin.

“I’d prefer something without alcohol and dairy. Do you have any recommendations?”

I would suggest a spiced fruit punch, served hot.

“Sounds good to me.”

And now there is a tall glass of something reddish-pink. It's as warm as a bowl of soup and tastes like strawberries, mango, and cinnamon.

Holding the glass in her hand, she relaxes around it, shoulders releasing tension. Taking a sip, she sighs contentedly before widening her eyes a bit. “I am grateful for your generosity.”

The first drink being free is a longstanding tradition; You'll make me blush with compliments like that. I'm glad you enjoy it.

"Hey bar, can I get a what she got? It smells interesting!"

That will be 0.36 Sovereigns.

"Awesome."

She sips at her new drink. "Huh. Huh. Not bad."
