"'Twas only a jest," Matiar replies, sounding miffed. To your questions, she replies, "Seems that some prefer sooner and some later, or so I've heard. It's usually not this hard to decide. If you want to know more, take it up with Brenelo. That clown actually likes blabbering about clan politics."

"I was thinking of visiting him next," muses Glint. "What do you say, greenjay? Want to hear some gossip from the Pratch's most colorful shepherd?"

[Matiar has little respect for Brenelo, but still gets rumors from him occasionally.]

"Sounds good to me, it seems it might behoove us to know more about what's going on."

Prota agrees to go see Brenelo. They say it's important to gather information. Prota is speaking mostly to Glint.

You answer Glint, "Sounds good to me, it seems it might behoove us to know more about what's going on."

Step 103

(The conversation with Matiar has reached an acceptable conclusion. The prompt can take Prota directly to Brenelo.) Matiar has other business to attend to, and will not object to Prota leaving. Glint knows where to find Brenelo. He escorts Prota out of the market section and through the camp to Brenelo's pasture. It is now early afternoon, and Brenelo is wrapping up his sales for the day. He will be happy to chat for a while.

Glint warns Prota not to take everything Brenelo says at face value. The shepherd sits on the clan council and is extremely charismatic and well-informed, but he's also prone to repeating rumors as fact. He is excited to see Glint, who always has interesting stories to tell. He doesn't know Prota but is delighted to meet them.

Brenelo spends much of the day attracting and chatting with customers and clansfolk. He is speaking with someone when Prota arrives. (Brenelo's customer is a worldbuilding opportunity.) They might be from another herding clan that lives nearby, and wants to exchange stock with Clan Pratchett. [Clan Vrelve lives in open country rise of the Utannic Road. They are expert clothiers and travel frequently to pasture their large herds.]

(The first introduction to Brenelo should establish some of his features.) Brenelo is talkative, friendly, and jumps to conclusions. He will say a lot before Prota has a chance to speak, and he will use people's names frequently. [As his magic is related to color and one of his specialties is attention-getting showmanship, Brenelo frequently shows off by changing the color of his clothes.] This should be noticeable in later prompts. To prepare for this, the next prompt should mention the color of at least one specific article of clothing. (This interaction should demonstrate the good humor and eccentricity of the Pratch, with a small undercurrent of more serious issues once the topic of politics is broached.)

"Let's get going, then," your uncle nods.

Matiar waves absently as you depart, already halfway into rearranging her stock.

Glint leads you out of the bustling market towards the outskirts of the camp. The afternoon sun illuminates Brenelo's orange banner brilliantly. Clad in an eye-searing riot of colorful cloth, the shepherd is in the middle of selling a bright lilac ram to a foreigner, a woman wearing the loose and comfortable-looking dun robes of the riseward Clan Vrelve. When Brenelo sees you and Glint, his broad grin widens and he wraps up the sale quickly.

"Glint! What an unexpected surprise!" Brenelo calls, waving his verdigris floppy hat in the air with glee. "And who's that with you?"

"My niece, Emerald," Glint responds, nudging you forward with his shoulder. "Emerald, meet Brenelo."

The shepherd re-hats himself and claps his hands together. "My, my, my, such a pleasure to meet a member of your family, Glint! I was just wrapping up some business with Hircent here, breeding stock for Clan Vrelve, you know, very important mission, came all the way from the Lyab Hills.

"I've heard a great many things about your clan, Emerald, a great many things indeed. It is quite the delight to see a pilgrim heading bluse after all these years. You are heading bluse, aren't you? Silly me, of course you are, your uncle must be escorting you! Oh, you could hardly ask for a better companion on the road. Glint's a right tough woodsman, aren't you, my good man?"

Your uncle rolls his eyes. "Sure."

Brenelo's floppy hat is currently verdigris, and his banner is orange.

"I'm very glad to have him! Do the colorful sheep breed true, will this one have purple lambs?"

Prota says they are glad to have Glint on their journey, and asks Brenelo if the purple sheep breed true.

"I'm very glad to have him!" you tell Brenelo. "Do the colorful sheep breed true, will this one have purple lambs?"

Step 104

Can Brenelo's magic extend through breeding? For most interpretations of color-changing magic, it wouldn't. Changing the exterior color of a creature does not usually edit its genes. Because Brenelo's magic works on nonliving things, it is most likely an exterior change; it does not cause a sheep to grow purple wool, it only changes the color of its existing wool. This magic has many uses, but creating exotic new sheep breeds isn't one of them. Brenelo has no reason to lie about this fact, since it will be common knowledge and can be easily verified in a few days when non-purple wool grows in at the roots.

Brenelo could respond to the bit about Glint, but doing so and answering Prota's question would be awkward. He transitions to talking about sheep instead. As a practiced salesman, Brenelo is friendly and humorous. He uses flowery and sometimes alliterative language to grab attention.

"Now that would be a trick, wouldn't it?" laughs Brenelo. "No, no, the lambs will be plain old grey-white like their cousins. But it's very important to us shepherds to have a good selection of breeding options for our stock. The color's just a bonus! This one will make a gorgeous robe, I'm sure." He gestures with his hat again, which has changed from green to yellow since you last glanced at it - at the purple ram and its penned-up relations. "Can I interest you in a fine specimen of Pratchett's peerless pasturage, Emerald?"

Brenelo's hat is now yellow.

"I don't think so, we're not bringing livestock besides the donkey, but we do have some wool that might sell better along the way if you turned it colors, do you do that?"

Prota demurs about buying sheep, and asks Brenelo if he is willing to color wool.

You reply, "I don't think so, we're not bringing livestock besides the donkey, but we do have some wool that might sell better along the way if you turned it colors, do you do that?"

Step 105

Does Brenelo offer dyeing services? He does, as it is a natural way to profit from his magic. Is the magic permanent? (No reason it can't be. It doesn't break the worldbuilding and it's a more useful magic if permanent.) This does make Brenelo's talents quite valuable, since dyes can be extremely expensive. [Brenelo is wealthy. He uses his wealth to influence Pratch politics. He keeps sheep in part as a way to earn approval from the heavily herd-based Pratchett clan, in part because livestock themselves are valuable, and in part because he enjoys it.] Because Brenelo is wealthy, he can afford to leverage his services into goodwill and frequently does so. He will offer a single dyeing of Prota's wool free of charge. He'll also cheerfully offer unsolicited suggestions about which cities prefer which colors. His ideas are part true insight and part rampant speculation, but the important thing - to Brenelo - is that he says them with the utmost confidence. As he talks, he keeps changing the color of his hat.

"I certainly do! I usually charge a small fee, but in your case I'd be delighted to offer a one-time Brenelomancy free of charge!" He bows, flourishing his hat, which is now a bright blue. "What color would you like? Let's see, along the Utannic you're bound for Adwell and the Wellspring cities, unless I do miss my guess? Luminous green is popular in the fishing city these days," his hat shifts again to the mentioned hue, "but I hear oyster white is in these days in Greward, whilst orange is quite the rage among Bluward tailors." He frowns at his now-orange hat. "Perhaps a darker shade is more appropriate now...ah! Brown! Surprisingly popular shade, much underappreciated. Hides travel stains, you know." Brenelo winks. "Lots of travelers could use a good brown woolen cloak."

Brenelo's hat is now brown.

"My favorite color is green, probably because of my name," I say, "so if green will sell in the fishing city let's go with that."

Prota chooses to have their saleable wool dyed green.

"My favorite color is green, probably because of my name," you say, "so if green will sell in the fishing city let's go with that."

Step 106

Brenelo locates and colors the wool after Prota makes it available. Hircent departs, having concluded her business with Brenelo. While he works, Brenelo continues to chatter. He wants to get Prota talking as well, so he asks easy-to-answer questions. One of them will be about Prota's experience visiting Clan Pratchett. Neither Prota nor Glint have told Brenelo that they are on Prota's pilgrimage, but it's an easy assumption to make. Also, rumors travel quickly among the Pratch and Brenelo is one of the first to hear them. He will also comment on Adwell's slightly rocky situation. He might ask Glint who the woodsman has spoken to yet, knowing who Glint's friends are. (That can wait and needn't be an important part of the player interaction, since the focus is on Prota right now and should not devolve into a conversation purely between non-player characters).

Prota still has Beldry and the cart with them, and can easily retrieve the wool therefrom. Brenelo, always happy to show off, will take his time coloring the wool.

"A fine choice, a fine choice indeed!" Brenelo chatters while you retrieve the wool. "Of course I'm sure you've heard about Adwell's troubles, what with all the travelers heading gree these days. Such an unfortunate incident. I imagine those remaining will be in want of good supplies, though, a migration always does drive up demand. So, how are you finding our fair clan? I hope the market was to your liking?"

The color change itself only takes a moment, but Brenelo makes a production of it, rolling up his sleeves and gesturing with a flourish, making the wool shift through several slightly-different shades before settling on a green so bright it almost glows.
