Reliance the gun comes to Strawgoh
Permalink

There's a building. It's really more of a shack actually, barely four walls and a door, but it could be a place to hide if you really needed a place out of sight for some reason. It's not obvious why the shack would be right there in the middle of nowhere but there it is.

Never mind the weird runes around it on the stone.

The door is open.

Boom.

The cannon shot resounds over the landscape, with the cannonball traveling implausibly far to land among the enemy army. They could have sworn there was nothing up on that hill, besides the old rundown shack, and when they're done frantically scrambling away from the missile, they turn to see... still nothing.

The cannon, Reliance, has positioned himself to roll into the shack with the momentum of the recoil. Reliance isn't sure why the shack is here, either, but it makes for convenient cover. That army will come to investigate, of course, but Reliance has already transformed into an inconspicuous tiny gun: the kind you might find on a lego soldier. No one will find him, half-buried in the dirt that's still settling from the cannon's recoil. He'll just hide out here until they're done searching.

Inside the leaky wood shack is a stone floor and heavy red stone walls. Engraved on the walls are friezes and scenes of animals cavorting and dancing around. Many of these animals upon closer inspection are anatomically confused; there is a lion with the body of a centipede, here is a falcon with the stinger of a wasp, that appears to be a bear with tentacles as though of some monster of the deeps.

The door is still open, but ajar.

Reliance’s tiny scope is currently lying on the ground, pointing along his toy barrel, aimed at a narrow circle of space on the floor. He doesn’t see the friezes on the walls, but he does notice the stone floor. That’s odd—when he peered inside just a minute ago, he could have sworn the floor was hard-packed dirt. Perhaps the material is different in different places; one disadvantage of seeing through scopes is that Reliance’s field of view is very narrow. This isn’t the first time he’s missed something obvious.

Lying still would be the wisest course of action here, but Reliance doesn’t sense any minds nearby yet, so he has some time. He transforms, reforming into an identical toy gun that’s rotated half a degree clockwise, and takes in the new view. Also stone floor. Transforms again. Still stone. Rotates a wider angle this time. Where’s the dirt floor he saw before? It doesn’t really matter, of course, but Reliance hates not knowing things.

After a little while there are minds approaching.

There are four minds, all about the same distance away from Reliance and getting closer. Each of them is bright, in whatever the magical gun senses Reliance is using. One of them is pushing out some kind of mental pressure, like soft snow settling over the mindscapes around him.

The friezes, which had been moving in slow dance and games of tag, still.
