Temple and his mother decide that she doesn’t need to go along. It’s not that she doesn’t have unresolved feelings, but considering how the first encounter went there is no need to add extra feelings. She is reassured that Temple is unlikely to be hurt or anything and that he can deal with the situation by himself.

Only when he is halfway there does Temple consider questioning himself if he can deal with the situation by himself.

Stephen is already waiting for him at the restaurant. The place is not completely empty, but it's not peak hours. And they may have a booth for themselves. Away from the windows and the television.

Not to mention charms against anyone trying to eavesdrop, but it would be weird if someone right next to them failed to listen to their conversation.

Temple wonders if this is a mafia owned bar, the kind that only exists to laundry money, which leads him to wonder if a secret clan of wizards counts as a sort of mafia. He was starting the train of thought about Avalons possibly being involved in similar schemes when he spots his father.

He approaches very quickly and without giving the other man time to give any sort of pleasantry, "Explain yourself."
