Tianjin have today invited a pair of independents from Cambodia, so there is no need for Huang to even ask if she can join them for lunch. She looks for the nearest table with enough remaining seats that it would require someone to be actively rude to shoo her. That one has - no, there comes one of their friends - that one is - oh, they're speaking English -
"It looks like you're taking more writing and history classes than I am, do those tend to be easier or do you expect them to be easy for you specifically?"
Ribo shows her schedule.
On Mondays she has into to shop first thing followed by Asia in Modern History and Calculus for Engineers. Then there's lunch before a back to back writing classes in Russian Literature Before Pushkin and Poetry and Prosody.
Tuesdays she has intro to lab first thing followed by Fundamentals of mechanical design and then lunch. After lunch it's two math classes in Formal Logic and Spell craft and Applied Electromechanics.
Wednesday is the same as Monday except with Mal Studies instead of Shop.
Thursday mornings has language lab followed by Western European history through 1500 and the same classes as Tuesday after dinner.
Friday is completely identical to Wednesday.
A lot of this is in English so Huang can't read it. "I think I expect history classes and literature classes to be easier to do on my own time, which I am likely to need to do."
"If you're pretty sure I won't have to learn English in addition to Korean."
"I don't either. I'm told the writing system for Korean is very straightforward where it isn't just hanzi, though."
"I wouldn't know, Mother told me to avoid researching etymology and how similar languages are."
"Mother said that if you let the school pick it'll usually only introduce you to one language at a time but if you get curious it can have you learning a bunch of languages simultaneously and that's harder."
"Oh, I see. I'm letting the school pick, I just anticipate Korean. I suppose it could also be Japanese, because of the Japanese theater class."
"I'm expecting something similar with Russian. Fortunately, it's one of the languages I brought a dictionary for."
"Apparently it's often a bad idea to take books out of the library and that's a bit limiting if you're trying to learn a language."
"Library books can run away like spellbooks do if you're not careful about it and if they do you probably won't be able to find them again."
"Yeah, I think it's mostly an argument for not taking more than one book at a time and returning them if you're not using them actively. I don't actually know for sure though. Mother's advice is usually framed in terms of being more cautious than strictly necessary."
"Mother thinks I'm too impulsive and idealistic so her advice is meant to compensate for that."
"Ah, I see. Then I will get a Korean dictionary from the library, when I need one, and kiss it goodnight every day."
