After her meeting with Z this morning, Hannah is pumped for Magical Pigments and Dyes. Maybe they'll teach her how to make tattoo ink.

The classroom is small, only six desks, and pretty cramped. There's a screen at the front, a floor drain, and a couple vents. Hannah takes one of the better seats since she's early. (And besides, she is with an enclave.)

The lecture starts.

"Woad, Isatis tinctoria, is one of the oldest dyes in the world, used by the Egyptians to dye the wrappings of mummies, and by the Picts of scotland in the time of Ancient Rome. Its vibrant blue remained in use as a staple dye during the medieval period, along with yellow weld and red madder. It has been used in chinese traditional medicine and remains used in some modern clothing despite the rise of synthetic dyes..."

Iron slips in after a satisfactory enough Accelerated Algebra and moderately interesting trip into the magic of the midieval world - she'd always had a taste for Iron Gall inks for some of the simpler workings, but diving into some more specific angles for this would be fascinating...

She sets up her spot next to hannah's - close enough to brush her hand if she wants - and takes a quick glance through the texts. Apparently it's a decent medium for water and silica effects from a linguistic quirk, alongside the more obvious things with the color. That'll be interesting to poke around on, as she'd mostly just worked with 'the energy of the heavens' rather then something more classically elemental like that.

"Interesting ink. Not much of an alchemist myself, but seems like it'd be useful for some odd interactions with durability, perhaps? Though not sure how much to expect the alchemical uses to neatly overlap with the uses as an enchanting medium."

Wilbur takes--a seat. One that is unlikely to get him killed and also unlikely to get him ousted by an enclaver.

He takes detailed notes and resists the urge to cross-reference things in his textbook. He can do that later. He settles for marking things in his notes to cross-reference later.

Ennis is legitimately kind of excited about this class! She just got a spell for woad, too. She winds up in the slightly better seat right next to Wilbur's that he skipped because an enclaver would want it; here she is. "Good afternoon," she tells him, writing down key words in bullet points.

"Good afternoon." He would be polite even if this person didn't have a power sharer on their wrist, but they do, so. He's very glad he didn't take that seat. Probably it's not safe to say more than that to an enclaver based on that amount of prompting.

(He discreetly steals a glance at their clothes.)

Her notetaking is relatively minimal - transcription work to her main notes can wait 'til later, and there's a mini-glossary for the chapter at the end - though there's still a few things to annotate there for the slightly excessive brevity, despite the fairly solid quality so far...

"Good afternoon to you all."

Ennis has nice crisp clothes, very classy, lightly magical, navy blue and khaki.

Her clothes are simple soft and stretchy affairs that hang somewhat loosely around her, probably to accomodate shifting, and have a faint trace of some sort of ward working projection that's sort of spilled into them over time, with some odd little adjustments in the fabric to accomodate differing configurations of her crotch and chest comfortably alongside the simple 'room'.

There's a belt at her hips, and an inscribed sword hanging off it that's rather magical for a freshman's work, and a few minor items perhaps noticeable inside the pouches.

She's wearing a black silk shirt, the top two buttons undone, black slacks, and heavy combat boots in a fashionable style that come up to her shins. A power sharer clasps around her right wrist. Her fingers tap against her lips in thought, and she runs them through her close-cropped hair in a way that suggests she's used to a much longer style.

She looks over at Iron. "I heard celtic warriors used it as a body dye, but modern reenactors found that it was caustic. Maybe they were using alchemy to make something more neutral?"

She hums a little.

"Perhaps. I could see a few other angles - if you can create a neutral surface for something like that to rest on through some ward along the body? I've done a little work on making my body passively resilient, and if you did it right there's some options that would make that a non-issue. I suppose it could also just be some silly mana generation idea around trying to get them to resist the pain or they figured out some enchantment that made the disadvantage moot - perhaps it's transmuted into something less harmful upon application with the working?"

She jots down a few notes - tricks around a ritual application could be interesting, and that's something she hasn't explored too much.

She licks her bottom lip thoughtfully.

"I think maybe with the right binders you might be able to make it less caustic, but who knows if that's how they did it historically. Maybe I should be actually listening to the lesson."

She quiets, but the lesson is just talking about how the dye extracted from woad is actually indigo.

"Well..."

She tilts her head and smiles a little as her hair falls a bit further over her face.

"This isn't a history class, you know."

She flips through the section on Woad in the textbook.

"I do like the idea of mixing in something there for what it's worth - perhaps a traditional cleansing agent like blessed water? Considering that the processing steps already involve a few steps of processing with water to get it the mundane way..."

"I got a spell that was intended as a fixative for woad. I was intending to adapt it for other makeup but it might also have had an anti-caustic effect."

"I wonder how easy woad will be to obtain from the lab supplies."

"That's cool! I'm not really going for makeup, but it's still interesting to think about. I'm Hannah, you?"

"Ennis, Manchester. Cosmetics are my affinity, so it's not as frivolous as it sounds."

"Toronto. Speed here. I should really get around to a supply run before everything's gone."

Oh no the enclavers are talking like he never said anything probably it was horribly presumptuous to speak up.

She raises her eyebrows dubiously at 'might'.

"Would strongly recommend checking that and ensuring you know the details of your spells wherever feasible. As for finding some..."

She slides a finger across her chin as the lecture drones on further about the cultural importance of it.

"Probably worth a supply run for ink ingredients soon regardless of whether they have that specifically - just a matter of finding the right place to sack and enough people for a reasonable expedition."

"I'm not going to cast the spell till I've figured out more about it."

She notices Wilbur's expression. "Did you want to come on that alchemy supply run? I'm not going to tell you to butt out, more eyes is always good."

"Good, and likewise."

She nods at Enris somewhat curtly, and a bit deeper and more patiently at Hannah and Wilbur.

"Oh, and I suppose I might as well note that my affinity is transmutation - though have a bit of a speciality in personal wards as well."

"Ah--I would love to."

"We can do that this evening then! It'll be fun. Well, more fun than homework." She makes a face. "We'd better keep it quick, but yeah we should have time to fit it in. It's only the first day."

"Good idea. Let's say we meet up after dinner in the cafeteria then go? I'll see if I can make some extra preperations before then, and hopefully that'll be enough time for everything else to be in order."

"Works for me. You two?"
