Alyona, Hannah

Alyona is the first one to get to class, so she dawdles at the door doing the mal checks she can from there until a few others start to show up and they all go in together. One of the desktops doesn't look quite right - the surface doesn't reflect light quite the same as the rest. Alyona takes a seat safely away from it.

On her desk is a copy of Anglo-Saxon Primer With Grammar, Notes, and Glossary; Eighth Edition Revised. She flips through it idly as she watches other students filter in.

Hannah comes in, checks the room, and waves casually to the other students. "Hey everybody," she chirps.

"Hey. Keep clear of that one desk, I'm not sure what's up with it but there's definitely something up with it."

"Thanks," she says, and takes a seat away from the weird desk. She gets out her textbook and browses the table of contents. "Small class, huh?"

"Yeah! Which is weird, you'd expect tons of people to be doing Old English!"

"People just don't think of it as a separate language, I guess? Beats me. Anyway it's perfect for me given I'm alchemy track."

"What's the tie-in there? Are a lot of alchemy texts in Old English or something?"

"I've only got English, so..." She shrugs.

"Oh! Wow, I guess that would do it. Old English is like... not super Englishy, though? Like, Middle English is basically modern English in a silly hat but Old English is, like..."

She flips open the textbook and reads aloud:

Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon.

Alyona realizes as she is speaking that the other girl would probably prefer to talk about anything else, but she cannot think of an anything else so she just kinda keeps going.

"I swear the Scholomance is like 'here you go! Still technically English!' Ha ha funny joke. I also have some bad French, because Canadian; I'm expecting to get that in language lab, and hopefully I can put it together fast enough. I just find it really hard to focus on memorizing vocab. Of course, I've got meds for that now, but still..." She shrugs. "Don't worry, I make up for it in alchemy skill. And, well." She waves the hand with her power sharer on it.

Oh, yay, anything elses. Should she commiserate about languages, relate her own experiences with focus meds, ask about her alchemy skills, or talk about their respective enclaves?

Alyona decides to go for the one that the other girl sounded most excited to talk about. Things are depressing enough here on there own, no need to remind people of it.

"So what kind of alchemy do you do? Got any specialties?"

"I've got a good focus potion and a bunch of recreationals so far. Plus the basics like anti-poison. Alchemy is fucking awesome, I'd do it all day if the school would let me get away with it."

"Oooh, focus potion! You trading that? You know you probably could get away with doing alchemy all day if you wanted, I bet you could find someone in every non-alchemy class to do the homework for you in exchange for potions."

"I'd probably run down on ingredients pretty fast. My focus potion has an amphetamine base and there's only so many sources of that around here."

"How much does it need? Would, say... Adderall work?"

"Adderall works. Do you have a line on some?"

"I brought in enough to keep me in supply through graduation. If the potion's better..."

"I feel like this could be the start of a beautiful friendship."
