Mildly scorched sophomores filter out, having apparently survived some mishap with minimal loss of limb, and the freshmen can have their turn in the slightly smoky lab.

Today's assignment: use a laboratory spatula, three-beam scale, graduated cylinder, and glass stirring rod to produce 500 mL of 15% saline solution.

That is NOT MAGIC and Karen is - not entirely sure that she knows how to do that but she feels like she has some guesses.

...is there any, uh, instruction. On how to do this. Just in case she's wrong.

There is a slightly water-stained packet bound with plastic rings! A section near the front has a list of lab supplies that they'll be using this year, with charming little sketches, and Appendix C has instructions for proper use of the various tools. It explains how to calibrate the scale and the correct way to hold the spatula and what good stirring technique looks like and that you should read the graduated cylinder at the bottom of the meniscus.

Wow this is not very Breaking Bad at all.

His three-beam scale is marked in ounces, grams, and scruples. What the fuck is this.

Karen can FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. She has never taken high school chemistry or used a three-beam scale or done half of this math, but it's not the terrible kind of math where it's just numbers, she can keep track of everything if she labels all of the numbers in terms of what things they actually mean.
