If you linger too long over the dinner line trying to figure out what something is you'll get (likely) elbowed impatiently by the student behind you in line, or (less likely) eaten, so most people move fast, scooping things onto their plates and then identifying them at their seats. Sometimes this is relatively straightforward, but sometimes it is challenging.

Dinner seems to be small cartons of milk, a casserole of some kind, brussels sprouts, rolls, sticks with skewered unidentifiable meat chunks on them, and banana pie.

Huang collects skewers and rolls. She is lactose intolerant but has been told that the milk will not do her harm since it does not technically contain any lactose, or any other features of milk. She takes a slice of pie, and then gets out of the way of the people behind her, and goes to see if Tianjin saved her a seat. They didn't.

Mei thinks the casserole looks like the sort of thing a mal could easily hide in and you'd never notice til you were dead. She steers clear of it and loads up on rolls and kushiyaki (or whatever it's called in English). She gets a slice of pie for herself and one for Ayako, and then goes and sits down at the table where the Kyoto upperclassmen are sitting and waits for her.
