His sword is magic! She doesn't sense magic on his person.

He knew about the sword, it's a family heirloom. He's still not Evil, though.

Can he try, experimentally, stepping away from the sword?

Sure. The paladins think he is still Evil. (The sword is not detectably Evil.)

Yeah, it was a long shot. Blai's metaphorical money remains on "vice he doesn't think much of" but he doesn't need to press the point beyond recommending that people keep an eye on him.

No one else has urgent business for him. Nenio is still diligently interviewing the two enchanted subjects, but if he's ready to march out he could tell her he's ready for her findings, it doesn't seem like she's going to successfully keep it brief on her own.

Yes, what's the executive summary?

"I suspect that additional magical energy to stabilize the spellform may have been somehow provided by the innate magical abilities of the caster. I am not aware of any species of demon that has this particular capability — it would be exceedingly difficult to accomplish with Suggestion spells — but there are many rare varieties of demon with unusual abilities, as well as innate magical abilities not associated with demons. Neither subject was an ideal interview subject, but I was able to glean the following information..."

Nenio reports that the heavily enchanted person eventually produced an account in which it was explained to him that every institution of the crusaders had been comprehensively infiltrated by demon cultists, from the Eagle Watch to the Inquisition to the ordinary soldiers, to the point that nearly all their activities were secretly in service to the demons. He reported feeling deeply conflicted about what to do, but eventually attempted to assist those resisting the 'demonic forces,' who he believed had disguised themselves as demon cultists to avoid suspicion from actual demon cultists. Her account is rather focused on criticizing his poor capacity for reasoning.

The other one seemed far more like a typical demon cultist, to Nenio's assessment, but compared to other cultists she has records of seemed far less interested in attempting to bargain for his life. He apparently was recruited to the demonic cause several months ago, after a travelling adventurer he had been sleeping with let slip that she had demonic connections; he was absolutely certain that he would be executed for his involvement, and that if he wanted to have any chance of living it was safest to side with the demons.

Information that Nenio apparently doesn't consider relevant, but which is evident from her account: the person who convinced the first person that the crusaders had been entirely infiltrated by cultists and the one the second one was sleeping with have near-identical descriptions, to the point of plausibly being the same person; both of them were tall women with eyes of two different colors and long, dark hair.

"—Tirabade wouldn't have hung him for that. I don't think Shappok would have hung him for that, if he reported it right away."

"Word of advice, never bet against Shappok hanging anyone."

"Maybe they were Suggested."

"If a Suggestion could convince people of that much we'd have lost a hundred years ago."

"Well, if she's maintaining a consistent description we know something to keep an eye out for. I would not have executed him for accidentally bedding a demon affiliate but he's rather past that point now. Nenio, is there a prospect of recovery for the more addled one? Would a Remove Curse do it, say."

"A Remove Curse is unlikely to be suitable, as relatively few enchantment spells produce curse effects, even those with effects that the recipient disprefers. I expect that a Break Enchantment would almost certainly be sufficient; if you do not have any spellcasters of sufficient power,  Dispel Magic may also be adequate, although it is likely that multiple such spells would be required."

"We could ask Fiducia Rathimus to prepare a Break Enchantment but I am not, actually, that confident that the man is worth a fifth circle spell or many third circle ones, especially since he is likely to be Judged leniently for having been so thoroughly divorced from his senses - do you have any sense of what he is like when not enchanted? Any idea if it can be expected to wear off on its own? Would a Protection from Evil and plenty of cheap help with saves get him snapped out of it long enough to produce straightforward testimony?"

"What a fascinating question! The spells which can be suppressed by a Protection from Evil are sometimes irregular. While the typical use is to suppress spells such as Dominate Person, which allow for the caster to exert direct control over their target, it has also been reported to suppress benign spells like Heroism in some cases. Perhaps we can conduct an experiment!"

"Of course we should save him if we can!"

"I don't know what he was like as a person but he's no great shakes as a fighter, I'll tell you that much."

"We can't let him die just because of that!"

"People die for want of a fifth circle spell on an absolutely constant basis. Breath of Life is fifth circle."

"Well, would he be casting a Breath of Life with that slot?"

"We could pay him to prepare one for the same amount of money. Admittedly it suffers for the Fiducia's lack of field deployment. I think the comparison remains by and large the right one, though. My inclination is to try the Protection from Evil - I still have mine, it will last a few minutes - after buffing him inexpensively, to see if he can produce lucid testimony or at least last wishes, and then pass him to the Inquisition in case they can follow up on more leads more than we can readily be distracted by."

"He is a fascinating research subject! It would be a shame to lose such an intriguing specimen."

"The Inquisition won't care about figuring out whether it's safe to let him go."

"The fact that I would do it if it were more clearly within my sustainable means is not helping him."

Sigh. "Another tragic loss for the study of magic."

Why does she think that's the point here?? "—I can gather people with useful domain powers, Knight-Commander. I don't know what spells people prepared today, or how many you mean to spend here."

"Only so many things stack, anyway, find me someone with Resistance -" He definitely knows several things that stack on top of the Guidance he will provide and that somebody probably has to hand somewhere and aren't too dear.
