Daya says hi to New York

Daya feels like she's made good use of her first couple hours here - she reminded all of the Jaipur upperclassmen of who she was, she pointed out some obvious maleficers to the other freshmen - there are a lot of them, so many that she's not willing to assume that she's reading people correctly, but it's best to at least be extremely cautious - and gone on supply runs to get paper, pens, pencils, and some alchemy and artificing supplies (which she doesn't have much interest in herself, but of course she's more than willing to carry supplies for the other Jaipur enclavers, some of whom do).

She wants to make connections at some of the other powerful enclaves, at least enough to trade resources later. She'd been planning to talk to Shanghai, but she's pretty sure Shanghai is the enclave with the obvious sobbing freshman, and honestly they look... kind of pathetic? That's not a kind thought, she can hear from the yelling that he's distraught over his brother's death. But it still makes her want to look for someone else, at least until the Shanghai enclave is a bit more prepared for visitors.

Instead, she sizes up New York. And, oh, is that -

She approaches the New York table with the air of someone who considers herself obviously worth their time. Specifically, she approaches the one who keeps eyeing various parts of the room like he's hoping for something suspect to be there.

"Are you looking for mals?"

"- usually? Not this exact second." This exact second he is eating bad pie.

"My mistake. Of course a warrior needs his strength, as well. Have I at least identified you correctly as Orion Lake?"

"Yes." Does he know this person. Why does everyone have to know him, this makes it really obvious he has trouble with names.

"I had heard that New York had a particularly powerful hunter this year. I suppose I couldn't wait to introduce myself to such a person. Daya Chaturvedi, Jaipur enclave." She gestures to the sword at her side. "I believe we may have some common interests."

"That is... a nice sword?" he says uncertainly. Oh god he's already forgotten her name, it is almost certainly not Daisy Chatterly. Maybe he can get Chloe to make him a flashcard later if this person is important.

"She has served my family for two generations. Of course this requires taking unfailingly good care of her. She gets terribly bored if she has nothing to do, so I am often on the lookout for things to stab with her."

"There was some guy," he thinks it was a guy, he didn't check, "who was spotting them for me before."

"Oh? Was he good at it?"

"Yeah. It must've been his affinity."

"Excellent. Do you see him anywhere here? I should like to introduce myself."

Orion looks around vaguely. "I think he was black."

Well that's not that helpful, but there aren't that many black kids, so she supposes she can at least keep it in mind. ...she hopes that Americans don't actually call almost everyone black, if they weren't paying attention.

"I see. I will be on the lookout for him. I should leave you to finish your meal, but if you run out of people to hunt with in the future - think of the Indian girl with the sword, all right?"

What is a polite way to say "I don't usually hunt with people". Uh. "I appreciate the thought."

"See you around," she says amiably, and goes off to inevitably gossip with the rest of the Jaipur enclave about how the most powerful enclaves here do not seem to be entirely as prepared for the Scholomance as one might expect.
