Zeke knows that at least some of the other children would have been killed. He can't bear to find out who, especially if Sam, or Patricta, or Gregor are in their number.

He takes to the air.

"Zeke!" She follows him into the sky.

The heroes shout at them to please stay, but are far too busy triaging to chase after them.

On the far side of the compound there is another running battle. Mr. Lionheart and a bunch of cronies with very powerfully magical looking gear versus a bunch of heroes. They appear to be in a standoff.

Zeke just wants to get away. His sister is busy trying to keep up.

The desert is wide, and they're faster and higher than everyone else who's running. A hero follows for a while but turns back. All of that is behind them soon.

They fly till they're almost exhausted enough to fall out of the sky, and find a shallow cave to fall asleep in.

They must be hungry by now.

Yes, very. What is there for them to possibly eat?

Agave fruits are edible, one of Sam's fun facts. Some cactus fruit too but thry can't recognize which are which. There are some birds and small critters they could try to catch.

They are surprised by how good they are at catching critters. And how agreeable they are even when eaten raw.

"I don't think Mr. Lionheart cared about helping us," says Zeke over a freshly killed coyote.

"They called us 'samples'. I wonder if any of them really cared."

"...Do you think Sam is okay?"

"I don't think a bullet would've hurt her too badly. I'm worried about Angie and Joey, I mean, what if the people driving the truck got the same order and-and-" she starts crying.

He tries to comfort her.

The desert gets surprisingly cold at night.

They attempt to keep each other warm via snuggling.

It helps, a bit. Starting a fire might prove necessary though. Or finding something blanket-like. If they don't, they won't get much sleep.

Turns out prolonged contact with Tabby's new plasma talons can make things ignite.

The next morning, the twins take flight again. There's so much space

Plasma does that.

Are they heading in any particular direction? They can see a lonely dirt road off to the south somewhere (and that's definitely the south over there, though neither of them will be sure why they know it's south). An unfamiliar scent is carried on the winds that blow from the west. And north is where they saw those lights at night.

For now they decide to follow the scent.

They pass a farm on the way there. Their books had pictures of farms, and this looks kind of like one except more rusty, muddy, and ramshackle than that guy Old McDonald's farm. It's got fields and goats, anyway.

They stop to pet the goats...and maybe try and steal some food from their kitchen.

They're interrupted. "¡Oy! Mi comida! Sal, ladrones! Tengo arma! Vete, vete, vola!" This guy is certainly angry. And he has a shotgun, which is being waved threateningly.

They flee into the sky!
