traveler said: One of them. The first one never really forgave me for leaving and I stopped getting along with the second one as well over time. River-flute is pretty great though.

gingercake said: oh, what a pretty name! river-flute!
5050501 said: why'd you break up with the first one?
gingercake said: what are some more crafter names?

traveler said: The story with the first one is kind of personal, sorry. It wasn't their fault at all, though.
traveler said: Crafters don't use names the way Amentans do, but we'll refer to each other by things we know about each other, or write under pen names about things we're known for. For specific other names - strong-tail or clever-tail or long-hand, for someone with a fleshcrafted prehensile tail; moon-clinker or glow-drops or talking-pebbles, for someone running a network machine that worked by dropping glowing pebbles of crafting-material through chutes onto each other; soft-touch or gentle-crafter or sweet-rest for a doctor who was particularly good with people; creature-friend or clever-dogs or least-hunter for someone who was really into training animals. Lots of people end up being called less evocative things either temporarily or permanently - the crafter diplomat calls me indigo because I do most of my crafting in that color, and I call them the diplomat because I don't know anything more interesting about them yet, and that's normal for new acquaintances.

soundandleaf said: that sounds a lot like job names except other people give them to you
gingercake said: is the diplomat lone sassafras?

traveler said: That's what the researcher calls them, yes.

traveler said: If we did names the Amentan way they wouldn't call themselves that anyway, I don't think. They were a vehicle specialist before you came.

soundandleaf said: I knew a Vroom once actually
soundandleaf said: she picked it when she was two and never changed her mind

traveler said: That's cute.

traveler said: Let's see, what other kinds of work did people here do - what's Amentan farming like? I imagine the plants are mostly the same but it's got to be different when you can't make one plant produce as much as you want it to.

gingercake said: yeah, I bet we need a lot more space! my farm ("my" farm, it's owned by Bountiful, I work in sorting and grading) is trying a bunch of different things to see what grows best here. getting good results with potatoes!

traveler said: That's good! What kinds of things haven't worked as well?

gingercake said: apparently local bugs LOVE fruit and we don't know what pesticides work well against them yet. last time I sorted strawberries I had to throw half of them into the compost.

traveler said: Oh, that's funny. That's another difference in the way we do farming. It's good for plants to attract bugs for us because then we can grow them for chickens to eat bugs from. It doesn't stop us from getting fruit from the plants since we can grow it and pick it right when we want it.
traveler said: If you can keep chickens with your strawberries I bet they'll help a lot.

gingercake said: I'll tell my boss you suggested it! but no one is going to buy fruit with bug holes in it.

traveler said: Yeah, definitely. Any other problems you've been having?

gingercake said: the ag techs are worried about local plant diseases jumping the species boundary :(
5050501 said: oh that's bad, that means person diseases could too
Permalink

traveler said: That's a worry, yeah. But they're talking about building us a tunnel into the city with a controlled area on the other end that'll be safer than being around the crowds, we can put preventative things in that.

gingercake said: how will that stop plant diseases?
yamo4 said: he means people ones, it won't help with plants at all obviously
5050501 said: There could still be environmental reservoirs
soundandleaf said: does plant magic work in the winter?

traveler said: If the plant is still alive it does. It's not a good idea if the plant is too dormant to take up fertilizer, though. Crafting can't make matter, it has to come from somewhere.

soundandleaf said: you could grow really fast plants to get the matter out of the carbon in the air!

traveler said: We do that for crafting-material, yes. But growing plants with fleshcrafting is too fast for that to be sustainable, they need supplementation - we make a crafting-material fertilizer that's especially easy for them to take up, nothing else works well enough.

gingercake said: is it the same fertilizer for every plant?
