It takes around ten minutes to walk from her apartment to the bus, which Evren's transit app reveals just got delayed. If the delay creeps over 10 minutes (which is sort of how it is with the 82), she should order an Uber, an unfriendly thought, especially at this point in the month. The bus is going to be late. Liliana is going to say that she's really sorry, but they need to talk about Evren's transportation situation, she's tried to be understanding, and this isn't working out.
Evren thinks of the word "catastrophizing", which Emma truly enjoyed using. Emma had so many words. Evren tries to remember if the real Emma had the same smug vibe as the Emma who sometimes crowbars her way into her mind, and decides that real Emma was probably well-meaning.
She waits for the light to change and shivers a little. She thinks of Victoria the early childhood education major saying that the opening shift is amazing because 🧘♀️✌️you get to see the sunrise ✌️🧘♀️.
But there's just no way around taking opening shifts. You will get perceived as "not a team player" or "not putting in 110%" if you say no too many times, especially without the excuse of some trusty sign of being a real person like "school" or "kids". And it's best to stay well on one side of that fuzzy line. Well, in general, but especially at Leaf's. Victoria doesn't get that or don't care, which is why she canceled yesterday night(!) and Liliana sent an @channel message that came as close to using 🥺 as you can get on a work Slack. But that's why Victorias get fired and Evren became the sole survivor of her Leaf's cohort, two years out. Even though when they asked about her favorite drink in the interview, she had to choke back a laugh. She still gets a weird feeling sometimes when handing customers their drinks, even though she's pretty sure it's low on the list of things she's doing wrong. Even two years ago she knew better than to talk about her family, though. Especially in an interview.
She pulls her mind back to her commute. Evren always figures this stuff out, and she's not going to get like, fired if she's a couple minutes late. Not with this "work ethic" (as Liliana says). She refreshes the transit app. The 82 bus got delayed another ten minutes. She feels a weird, spiteful sense of triumph over mental Emma.
The light changes. Evren opens Uber and it's apparently like 15 bucks, even before the tip; but there's a little parking lot closer to the 82 she can use as a pickup location, and DM-ing Liliana to apologize for lateness sounds rather grim. The countdown starts for the light. Evren starts across; she fiddles with the map to find the parking lot--
and doesn't notice the truck speeding through the intersection.
