"She only answers to the Heir of Slytherin," he says, tauntingly. "Kill them both."

(It's faint, but... He seems to be getting slowly more solid.)

Anathema turns toward the sound of whatever's approaching them, half instinctively, stills -

"I'M the Heir of Slytherin! The dead cannot be heir, and by my right as the youngest of Slytherin's line - "

- Wait what?

Ellie turns her attention back to getting the book.

The snake seems thoroughly distracted by Anathema's legal argument about the fine points of inheritance laws.

Riddle turns his stolen wand to Ellie, a red beam lancing from it lightning-fast.

Dodge-

So the book is clearly important, maybe the source of where he's coming from, can't mess around trying to get to it-

"Diffindo!"

The arc splashes off the book harmlessly. The pages aren't even a bit ruffled. He tracks her with his wand - growing more firm again - and frowns, apparently concentrating.

"Avad-"

She ducks hurriedly behind a statue.

"The book! We've got to kill the book!"

Riddle's curse hits the stone, setting the side closest to him briefly alight in sickly green fire. The basilisk hisses, clearly unsure what she's supposed to be doing, and sways closer to Anathema, curling between her and Riddle. Not attacking, though, either side.

"Killing Curse! Just want him dead! I'll try - "

She starts hissing again at the basilisk, trying to edge around for a clear shot at Riddle.

He tried to kill Professor Reynolds and last year he tried to take over Anathema and he broke the school year and he should die and she wants him to die-

She pokes around the corner of the statue and aims her wand at the book-

"Avada Kedavra!"

His blasting curse slams into the statue, sending shrapnel and dust flying - but not quickly enough to throw off Ellie's aim, not at the speed of death.

The book goes up in flames. He screams, more in anger than anything, dissolving into a cloying black mist.

Ellie heaves out a breath.

And Anathema starts coaxing the basilisk back into her den. She's shaking, next glimpse Ellie gets of her, but even though her face is pale she seems determined.

And Serpens Malfoy begins to stir, groaning.

Seems like everyone lives.

Who deserved to, at least.

"Don't open your eyes, Serpens," Anathema says, "Just - not yet."

"What - "

"Riddle! What happened?"

She keeps her head down and her eyes closed, though.

"He's dead."

"Good."

She starts shaking.

Ellie approaches to check her for injuries.

She's incredibly pale - anemic, really - and her skin's freezing to the touch. But she doesn't look externally injured. Just very, very upset.

Can likely wait for the mediwitch, then.

Speaking of which, are the house elves able to get down here?

They don't seem to be able to - or at least, none respond when Ellie calls.

Though a couple seconds later a brilliant red and gold and orange bird with wings like fire flies from the corridors they emerged from, crooning, and a wizard, holding a wand aloft, on the phoenix's heels -

Headmaster Dumbledore, his face drawn and wan as he looks about the scene. "Is anyone hurt?"

"Malfoy, sir- and Professor Reynolds, upstairs, it's basilisk venom-"
