"I do know already you're human,"  she points out, but she tugs one of her gloves off and comes over to put her hand on his.  She closes her eyes and tries to reach in the 'direction' of her cleric spells... no, it'd be not quite like that, tucked in off to the 'side' somehow where she didn't notice it before, like she didn't realize she had the sword thing until she picked one up... can she reach in the direction of the sword thing, find that same kind of connection...

(No, this is not a melee weapon, it's a human hand.)

She opens her eyes again after a moment or two and puts her glove back on.  "I- I think it's so?  I couldn't quite- I suppose if you're a secret dragon, we know I don't have it.  Or an eighth part elf or such- might it work on parts?"

"It might, I would expect you to notice that half-orcs have darkvision and such. I do not know myself to be interestingly part anything."

"Then I could ask one of the part-orc soldiers, and see if I can know still with my eyes closed, that should answer certainly either way..."

"Yes, that would work."

Nod.  She can help fill the cistern the rest of the way in quiet, then.

And the next morning, she can turn up at his office just before dawn, bleary-eyed and rumpled and Cabrera in tow (and also Cambra, whose shoulder is still kinda fucked and was keeping him up, so he's tagging along in case she needs another test subject after seeing it done).

Select Artigas has a leftover second circle spell and will burn it on Cabrera while Khalida watches.

Guidance and Detect Magic and she gets as close to the two of them as she can even though it helps less than you'd think compared to looking at something with her real eyes.

It's beautiful, like all spells are but also in a way she didn't expect, not quite transforming into a different distinct spellform and not quite just dissolving, delicate involutions turning over and over each other as it spreads out and sinks into Cabrera's damaged flesh.

It... doesn't look like something she can't do.  But it also doesn't look like there's an obvious trick to it different from what she'd done yesterday.

She tries anyway, of course, pulling Mending back to the tips of her fingers and not quite letting it go, closing her eyes to visualize pushing it outward, opening it up- she's trying too hard, she can tell, she's not being a cup or a conduit but she can feel everyone watching her and she ought to be able to do it-

-she loses it entirely and flops back with a sigh, opening her eyes.  "Nothing."

"What spell are you trying to convert?"

"...Mending.  But it's the one that ought be at first, in the space such that I can't catch it afterwards."

"...why did you put it in that slot?"

"I thought it more likely to need exactly one-" no, he means 'why an orison' not 'why Mending in specific', she is going to melt "I, um, I haven't still-"

"Haven't still...?"

"...haven't caught a real first."  She's folded her arms and hunched up into herself, glaring daggers at Cambra's still-injured shoulder.  "I have been trying.  I- may be just excessively dumbass."

"It is not... normal... for gods to choose clerics who are not Wise enough to manage first circle spells... but it is not so far as I know impossible, and wouldn't affect channeling..."

"Right."  Khalida huffs out a sigh and scrubs both hands over her face.  "So I'm a, a laundry cleric.  Until I become older or buy a headband."  She says both in the same frustrated tone other wizards might use for 'get Teleport' or maybe 'become an archmage'.

"An Owl's Wisdom will not last long enough to let you prepare a first-circle spell but it might let you convert a slot into a Cure. Not that this would make much sense as a tradeoff, because if I have the Owl's and we are in the same place I can just turn the Owl's into a Cure directly."

"And I don't have Owl's yet, and even I found someone willing to swap I haven't the ink for it, and I could rather use Infernal Healing in its stead, which is a circle lower anyway."  She smothers a yawn.  "I... should be curious to try if you've ever the spell spare.  But I can't expect it'll be useful beyond the knowing."

"Well, you might want to avoid Infernal Healing unless you have the trick of skipping the devil's blood for other reasons. ...I think today is not sufficiently dire that I cannot offer you an Owl's. Supporting you in knowing things is given the givens perhaps more relevant than it would naively sound."

She nods thoughtfully, and then beams at him at his last sentence, eyes sparkling.  It takes her a moment or so to remember to tamp it down to a dull glow, and another to actually get a sentence together.

"Then- I should like that very much.  I thank you."

"If I'm not mistaken the both of us are about to notice it's dawn, so you should be wherever you mean to spend the hour."

"Yes, right.  I'll return the same time tomorrow, then?"

"I can also do the Owl's earlier than that if you like but the same time is convenient for me."

"I do prefer earlier," she admits, with a tiny rueful smile.  "Before the evening channel?"
