They all try to respond to her at once, except the Fire, who is not quite as depressed as the Glass who flew away to the ocean but is still pretty nonagentic.

Wow, she should really have thought of that, Mindspeakers have conventions for group links but these people have never heard of Mindspeech.

:One at a time, sorry!: And she narrows the link to just one of them. :What was that?:

The Earth repeats, :You should wait until night when fewer of us are checked out:

:Oh. Right. Er, what does ‘checked out’ mean?:

:The students borrow us for practice:

:Practicing what?:

:Magic. But they can use us for anything while they have us:

:How many of you are there when you’re all here and not, um, checked out?:

:We're never all here at once, but twenty:

:And where are the amulets when you're not checked out?:

:Under guard round the clock in the room between us and the building's exit:

:Thank you:

Jisa tries to scry in said room.

No dice.

Oh. Huh. Jisa supposes it's not the first time the local magic has interacted with hers; she can break the amulets but they do show up as magic to her mage-sight.

Just to make sure she's done all her homework, she continues through the other elementals, except for the non-agentic one, and repeats approximately the same questions, seeing if she gets anything new.

The Water thinks she should talk to a student named Maurabel. The Wood thinks it makes perfect sense to kill humans for owning elementals and she should just do that till they cut it out. Penumbra is shy and says Water can speak for her.

She asks the Water where to find Maurabel.

She has checked out an Adamant and is probably in a workroom, over thataway.

Jisa thanks them, promises to come back that night, and heads thataway.

...She's going to talk to Maurabel but first she's going to read her mind to see what the deal is, can she do that from outside the workroom.

Maurabel is doing - nothing at all with the Adamant, actually, she is reading a book and the Adamant is also reading a book. This book was not scribed very well, she wonders if there's a way to do magical printing - you'd want Water and Wood for sure...

Huh.

What's the Adamant thinking?

She LOVES this part. She has read this poem five times and this is the BEST part.

Awww.

Jisa spends a moment smiling to herself, and then shakes herself and refocuses. She takes a deep breath, and knocks politely on the workroom door.

Maurabel gets up and opens the door. "...who are you?"

"Jisa," she says out loud, pointing at herself. "Maurabel?"

"Yes, what is it?"
