She manages not to have a facial reaction when the incident is mentioned, which is progress!

She does let herself squeeze Lucy harder, though.

When the call ends, she perks up a bit. "Tell me about him?"

Whoops.

“His name is Wilbur, I’m sure you heard that. He’s an introvert—he likes to say sometimes that I got all the extroversion for both of us and he got all the caution. He’s really into math and science. I’m going to use esper money to fund him getting a Ph.D.”

"A PhD in what?"

“I’m sure he hasn’t decided.”

Cara's eyes have been sparkling since I got all the extroversion for both of us and he got all the caution

"That sounds wonderful! I'm glad you two have each other."

She nuzzles Lucy.

“Having a twin is great! It’s like the universe giving you a free best friend from the beginning.”

Oh no that's so sweet?? "That sounds incredible! I'm an only child, which was... kinda lonely. I've always had to go out hunting for my friends."

She turns to Haru. "What about you? Any siblings?"

"Just me. My parents got divorced when I was a baby."

She tilts her head at him, thinking about family shapes (her friends', hers...)

"Are you and your dad close?"

"Oh, sure, I go visit him basically every year. Though he's where I get the introversion so it's a very low-key closeness."

D'awwww! And, hmmm... probably she should be trying to track if he's getting oversocialized, during a week of babysitting 2 awakening extrovert espergirls... She might ask Lucy what she thinks, the next time it's the two of them alone.

She glances at Lucy, curious to see what she'll make of Haru's family situation.

“I don’t have a dad, but it seems sad to have one and only see him once a year.”

Cara looks thoughtful. "I have friends I spend real time with maybe once a year, and I love and care about them a lot. I know that for some people, parents are different, but..." She shrugs.

"I dunno. If my parents ever decide to stop being defective, as Lucy put it, I dunno how often I'd want to see them. Maybe every few months?" ...maybe never, still. With esper money, she can get them excellent nursing care, as they grow older, she owes them that much, but.

“Well, parents are definitely absolutely different when you’re a kid. I haven’t had a lot of problems being physically away from Mum and Wilbur in college.”

...oh, duh, that makes sense. She nods.

"...Should we resume red-ifying your hair?"

"Yeah!"

Okay, the next step is to crack the marker open and extract the ink cartridge. For some brands of marker you can do this by twisting the end of the marker off with a pair of pliers.

Ooooh, fun! (...she grabs the green marker and tries to do it with her hands, and then failing that her teeth, just to see if she can.)

"They make these so small children can't make the maximum amount of mess, that was never gonna work."

"Buh I'm mmn" - she stops and removes the marker from her mouth - "But I'm bigger, and also often more resourceful, than a small child, so I figured it was worth a try." She giggles.

Does Haru have a pair of pliers they can use?

He can go look for one.

Once he's left the room, Cara nuzzles Lucy.

"Hmmm, do you think we should keep tabs on whether we're socialing him out? Since we're both pretty extroverted, and he isn't?"

(Things Cara has not incorporated into her worldmodel yet: esper superhearing)

"Uhhhhhhh...I'm not sure I know how to do that for people who aren't my brother when I'm not backlashed."

She looks thoughtful. "I'm decent at it when it's just me and the introverts, but it can be harder in a mixed group. I'll look for a chance to ask him if he wants or needs some alone time, maybe?"

She pets Lucy's hair.

“Or we could just ask when he comes back.”

Honestly... with Haru, yeah, the direct approach seems likely to Just Work.

(Cara is maaaaybe too used to lonely introverts who have trouble managing their own needs.)

"...Right, okay, that's much easier. Let's do thaaaaaat." She leans on Lucy playfully while stretching out the last word.
