When Vanyel is ready for the mad science tour, he shows him the monkeys. "They're monkeys," she feels it necessary to clarify. "I know they look very human at this point, because the whole point of them is that I'm going to move into one if I ever die, but they're not people, and I have forbidden the staff to name them. I could move into one now if I had to but I'd like to get one actually looking like me in particular first, and I want to stick more Gifts into them, I got Fetching out of some Changesquirrels but further work is needed." She shows him the mice, too. "Do you suppose Jisa'd like a winged mouse? What's her favorite color?" She shows him all her microbiology eggs. "That's a flu sample from the recent plague! I remembered to take one. Those there are other flus. The white eggs have more-alive microbes and the brown eggs have less-alive kinds - there's a cold one of the staff mages had a few months ago, there's food poisoning, there's the most common kind from healthy intestines - you could get your Sight this fine, you know, I don't do heavy Healing-Gift use apart from Sight for this work."
"Glad to hear it. Haven is really coming along, I think, it looks much more like a city now."
"You're making sound like last month it was a quaint hamlet, as opposed to having also been a city then."
"It was a city last month, fair. Two weeks ago it was not a city. There is not really a good word for 'was a city, but now half of it by surface area is burned to the ground'."
Then in a few days she'll go do that and see what prices she can command with a week's lead time in not-at-all-burned Petras.
She screens them - she has to explain the Truth Spell, since it's a Herald thing - and dishes it out.
She doesn't even need Leareth's help anymore, since she has mage-sight now, but he hangs around anyway so he can watch and be smug about his lifebonded and soon-to-be-wife. In a day's work, she can rake in enough money to pay for rebuilding an entire neighbourhood in Haven.
She tells people who couldn't squeeze in that she'll be back again in a week, and they can go home and disburse the money according to the budget she's thrown together in recent weeks.
Belrun's pleased with herself too. "I've been using my status as the only person who can do this for the time being," she tells Leareth later, "but I don't think you will meaningfully drive the price down if you can do it too, do you want Healing?"
She puts it in place. "There. You can sit with me when I'm doing it and pick it up that way."
Great! Leareth will also trade more general Healing-lessons for mage-lessons, though Belrun doesn't have any experience with battlefield Healing of injuries so he hassles other Valdemaran Healers for that.
It's fun to be teaching each other even if she doesn't know everything he wants to learn.
Shavri helpfully offers Healing lessons to Leareth, and counts down the days until her lifebonded will no longer be King and their lives will belong to themselves again.
Hey, if the Shadowgod signs off on it Foresight-wise, Belrun's okay to give Randi Healing (Sondra too, why not) a bit earlier than planned, her track record is really encouraging.
Leareth has a conversation with the Shadowgod planned, so he might as well ask that too. ...And he gets a reasonably clear answer that it seems fine, unlike his other questions, where he got frustrating non-answers.
Randi confirms the next day that he's feeling a bit less tired than usual today, so there's that! Also Sondra having Healing is great, because with the new Palace renovations they sleep in the same room, and Sondra needs less sleep and can Heal him very slowly and gently during part of the night.
