It’s 1997 in Boca Raton, Florida, a pastel suburb just north of Fort Lauderdale and an hour away from Miami. We’re at the mall— there’s Del*a’s, Auntie Ann’s, Orange Julius, Burdine’s. Cool marble floors— it’s a little high end— artificial palm trees, a beautiful fountain.
Jess is looking around for a place to have a cold drink. She just finished an hour of DDR at the arcade, and she's thirsty. Maybe there's a milkshake place somewhere? She does not know this mall so well.
"Hey Clar! I was at the arcade, playing the new song release on the DDR. I've been grinding Believer all week. I love the song, but still can't do it perfectly! Do you want to join me for a new round?"
She buys a vanilla milkshake with extra ice, and come sit at the same table while waiting for the order.
“I’m too lazy to play,” she says laughing. “If I’m being honest, I come here to eat… I don’t even shop anymore. I’ll buy Chinese food, walk around the mall twice, come back to the food court, get more Chinese food…”
She sighs. “have you heard about how people have been trying to explore some hidden hallways behind Walden Books?”
The food court is a semi circle. Outside of it is the arcade. At the center is Walden Books.
”apparently, they’re haunted.”
“You have to sneak through the staff door in the back, John told me there’s a hallway back there separated by a big white door. Before the white door, there’s a bathroom— I think getting access to that is easy enough. Beyond the white door is a labyrinth of hallways, apparently they keep going and going and going.”
"I wonder what use they could be making of so many hallways. Let's go and explore!"
"Oh... wait. What did you mean by haunted? Like, someone got spooked once or some terrible thing happened?"
Well.. the rumor is that there’s a demon. Who knows. I mean, abandoned hallways are creepy as it is. Could just be different groups of kids exploring and scaring one another.”
she stands up, tossing her drink in a garbage can that’s a few feet away. She almost misses, but at the last moment it falls in the can.
“I guess we’re about to find out.”
