At her parents' insistence, Emmelia takes a semester off from school. It doesn't improve anything. Even off the antipsychotics, she still walks wrong, her hands still tremble. At least she can think now.
She still sees the devil. Sometimes she talks to him, cries on him, plays chess with him. Sometimes she screams at him. Sometimes she takes out her rosary and murmurs hail mary, full of grace, the lord is with thee until he stops trying to talk to her and goes away.
Sometimes she can almost convince herself he's not real.
It's close enough to coping. They let her go back to school. Her professors are very compassionate. All of her friends have graduated. She goes to church, most Sundays, and she leaves dishes in her sink to spite the devil.
A year after her best friend died, Emmelia takes a can of spray paint to his grave, marks a shaky Z over a name that wasn't his.
