He flinches, trying to cower away from her.

"There will be none of that," she growls, grabbing his hair. "Who did you talk to?"

"Just - just the preacher girl - "

She gives him a shake. "You have no room for other gods. You need no other gods."

"She's - she's more - "

"She is less." The flickering light throws her face into sharp relief, emphasizing contours, bouncing of the subtle iridescence of her hair. She is as beautiful as she is terrifying. "Look at me. You think because I was gone you could replace me? You will submit to my will alone."

He's shaking visibly. But he looks her in the eye, in a fit of valor or stupidity.

"There is no submission in her light. She won't stand for you hurting people - "

Luc' hisses and slaps him hard enough to knock him to the ground.

She raises her arms and begins muttering a prayer in Old Realm, entreating Cecelyne to swallow this fool and show him the perfection of Her true justice.

The sand beneath him softens and he begins to sink down.

He screams until the sand swallows him.

"A coward and a weakling. Bring the next."

"Yes, my lady."

The next person comes more willingly. She's apologetic - almost ingratiating. She's one of the people who accepted one of Luc's stronger gifts, and who now apologizes for having doubts.

There can be no forgiveness without penance. Luc' gives her a bag of locusts, enough food for a week, and orders her to walk west, barefoot, communicating with no one, without detour or delay, taking nothing else, until she reaches Nexus. There she will begin her new life as a street beggar. And if she keeps faith, accepts her station willingly, then perhaps Luc' will find a new use for her.

(And if she disobeys, of course, a more serious doom will befall her.)

She shakes, afraid, but nods, a sensation of imminent doom washing through her.

"Go, then," Luc' says sternly.

She leaves.

"Thank you," she says to Jade Stream. "And the next, please."

"Of course."

The next one apparently presents some trouble; Jade isn't injured when she returns, but the woman has a split lip and a limp, and Jade is holding onto her rather tightly. The woman's one of the secondary recruits, not someone Luc' has really interacted with, let alone given gifts to.

"Another coward, it seems, my lady," Jade says.

"Put her down," she says, pointing in front of her.

Jade pushes the woman forward, shoving her to her knees.

"You will explain yourself now," she says.

"I - didn't think - " The woman's shaking hard enough she's having trouble speaking.

"What? That I wouldn't be back? That I wouldn't find out? That your disloyalty wouldn't matter? That I wouldn't care?"

She's now crying!

"I - I hadn't been for long - I'd never been sure - "

"You do not possess the luxury of being unsure. You belong to my gods. You belong to me. Your worship is of us, and no other. You live your life to the laws I give you."
