"...yeah. They say that about a lot of things."

"Miss you anyway."

"Miss you too."

She's not going to cry. She's not the dead one.

"Look out for yourself. Okay? I'm not – it's kinda hard to watch your back from here, you know?"

He grabs for her hand again, comes up with nothing.

"I -- yeah. I'll do my best."

You too doesn't make any sense. He's in Purgatory, he doesn't need to look out for himself, he's not in danger.

"...I love you too."

He opens his arms and drops his knees and leans in all at once to throw his arms around her, and there's another moment where it feels like he's really there in the flesh, like he's come back from the dead –

and then he's gone, and the church is empty.

She cries, and cries, and cries, and prays, and cries.

Eventually she sleeps.

In the morning, she goes to class, like a responsible person who didn't spend the night hanging out with their dead best friend.

She can't stow away in the church every night. But she can look up local perpetual adoration chapels, and sleep in the back pew of a different one each night, halfway propped upright against her backpack, starting awake most hours at the change of shifts, only leaving to attend classes.

It's not the most restful sleep she's ever gotten. But she only has to make it until Monday.

On Friday morning, someone is waiting for her at an otherwise deserted bus stop. He has an iron grip on the handle of his umbrella, and is leaning on it slightly as if for support.

...you know what, the devil has a right to public transportation the same as anyone. She's just going to turn around and walk to a different bus stop.

She is now being followed by a very put-out looking demon. He's not particularly fast – the umbrella is, apparently, standing in for a cane – but he is, apparently, motivated.

"You told him he was in purgatory."

"Retro vade, Satana," she sighs, not particularly hopeful.

(She also stands and waits, because the alternative just feels too rude for words.)

"Thank you," he says, when he catches up. "–I would be quite grateful if you would not do that again."

"Oh," she says, dryly, "sorry, spoiler alert."

"This is not canonical material," he says, wearily.

"No, it's capital-T Tradition. What do I look like, a Protestant?"

Very clever.

"The poor boy is paranoid enough."

She crumples, just a little bit, slipping her heavy backpack off her shoulders to dump it on the ground and lean against a fire hydrant. "Yeah. He is."

"I wish you'd leave him alone."

"...his situation would not be improved."

“Come on.”

"You have never seen purgatory."

"I'm aware that there's suffering."

"Suffering is one thing. Do you know the kind of – cremation that boy would have to go through to enter the kingdom of Heaven?"

"Not cremation. Smelting. And I don't think it's so much as you're implying."

"I'm sure he would be thrilled to be the armor of God."
