"If it's likely to be very slow, that gives us more time to navigate, but it means we have to have a relatively sustainable plan to cope with a prolonged transition period."

I think it's likely to be slow. Probably limited by the number of skilled Draak, like Enkindling, though one of my favorite areas of study is turning magical processes into tools. Depending on what if anything Weaver of Essence and Darktooth and all the others come up with I could see artifacts helping. But we do not scale things up easily, as a general rule.

"And it doesn't sound like the sort of thing we might be able to solve with genetic engineering, as they're trying with Bloom's work."

Theologians would have better predictions about that than me.

I want to ask Amentan companies to manufacture some of the parts for more rods of healing. Do you know someone who might be able to give me advice on how best to proceed?

"Sure, I can put you in touch with our procurer." He provides an email address.

Hello, email address, he is the alien who invented FTL and the rods of healing and he would like to get a production run of high precision metal parts! He has money but doesn't know what it's reasonable to expect to pay or how to go about doing this.

The procurer can recommend the following companies who will need the following specs! Here's a very ballpark estimate, the companies will have more precise quotes.

He thanks the procurer and assembles specs and emails companies between mediating the ongoing Enkindling argument and talking to various blues and greens.

Everything he asks for is very fiddly and intricate, as if he's never heard of designing for manufacturibility.

They ask for tolerances.

Those are pretty low. And the alloy has to be just right.

That's going to be expensive, and more expensive if they can't ship any duds and have to filter those out at the factory.

...That's expensive enough it's not worth outsourcing. He can test for duds. Would it be cheaper if the tolerances were bigger? What else makes it cheaper?

Bigger tolerances would help and so would a bunch of other adjustments to make it work better with their equipment.

Ooh.

Can he get someone to come talk to him about that please? He's willing to pay expensive-but-not-world-famous green level consulting fees for one of their best.

Sure! This purple engineer will be over right away!

He brings out a bunch of exotic alien tools and works-in-progress to the field near the train station and is visibly excited waiting for them to arrive.

The engineer appears after a few hours.

Hello! He's read and assumed things about how mass production works but it's pretty confusing in the best way because it looks like it should all make sense if only he studies it enough and he is Very Excited to be able to talk live with an expert about how to make things better for mass production! It seems complicated enough to be its own massive field of study and that's kind of amazing!

It is a field of study! The purple went to school for it and the field has since advanced.

Ooooh. Telepathy is very helpful for sending mental images that this had to go here so it can do that, and it can't do that because it would create an induction effect but this part could go away if the other thing was changed...

The purple rapidly gets very pro-telepathy for these reasons! He hates drawing diagrams ever since he hurt his dominant hand!

Being a big, toothy, strong being and flying around and breathing underwater are all neat, but the Song is probably the best thing about being a Draak.

...How old is the injury?

Three years. It healed pretty well at first but as he's gotten older it's started deteriorating again.

Hmm.

The True Song of Healing would fix that. An old injury like that any lesser magic wouldn't help, but that one is a Magnum Opus, refined and perfected in tiny increments over centuries. It's also sacred, and deeply, utterly exhausting.

...Hmm.

The purple has moved into a management role and hand only really bothers him when he has to draw diagrams or carry groceries. He'll retire soon. He wouldn't want to put out an alien with lots to do towards the project of planets.
