"If it does affect within a range, about what range might we expect?"

She makes what might be recognizable by now as a 'hmm' noise.

...A small one.

"- a few feet, a couple of rooms away...?"

(A purple arrives bearing a large package of bacon and some takeout containers, which he passes through the greys. They look it over and pass it on to Bloom.)

I am not sure at all, thus the test. It would surprise me if such a weak Song had effects further away than my wings are long. That looks like perfectly fine meat.

Just how large is 'large'? More like a big package from a grocery store, or a food service style bulk bag?

There are twenty pounds of bacon in here.

This will feed me for three days if I don't fly or do much magic. I like how neat it is. No blood. Though blood is tasty in its own way. I might need to eat a lump of iron if I mostly eat bacon. What's in the other boxes?

She opens it and starts munching on bacon, three strips at a time. Much more neatly than one might expect of a giant predator.

"It's a fried beef dish. Mostly meat, some onions and spices, some cooking oil."

She tries some. The tail thumps against the wall happily.

Spices! I don't taste the onions at all but even they carry a slightly different texture and this interesting sauce! This is tasty. Yes. It's more expensive than plain bacon, though?

"Not by very much, but we weren't sure you'd like it."

I wouldn't want to eat only this, but variety is interesting. We don't usually do cooking more sophisticated than breathing fire on whole carcasses.

"We can bring you an assortment, then!"

Even if nothing else comes of my presence, novel pleasures are very welcome. Gardens, nail-painting, frying, gathered knowledge... Convenience. I hope there is some way of achieving balance so these things don't trade off so much against other things we Draak care about. The Onesong becomes greater when two beings both find more of what they want after meeting. I hope, but all I can actually do is my small part in the symphony of the world, to study springing and see what I can do about it.

"It'll be an enormous boon to our world if it can be done."

Then I should settle down and focus on learning what I need to learn.

And she does that.

After she's done hanging out in a train station eating bacon and people-watching, they escort her back to the warehouse, and there's a language tutor waiting!

She could stay in the train station all day, easily. But eventually she does want to go back.

Hello! You are my teacher?

"Yes! My name is Kimya Sebdan. Is this too late in the day for you? I can come back tomorrow if you'd like to rest now."

Now is fine. You have come to teach me, it would be rude to ignore that.

I can't make the right sounds to speak like you do. I wanted to learn reading and writing, instead.

"That makes a lot of sense! Our alphabet is based on the sounds, and that's where I'd usually start, but you don't need to pronounce it yourself." She has brought some tutoring materials, including a printed alphabet.

Bloom can make some of the breathier sounds, and send the feeling of hearing a sound to ask or answer questions about the ones she can't make. She goes over the whole thing several times, very methodically.

Why were these sounds and symbols chosen?

"The Baravic alphabet was invented by a green called Toler Vay," replies Kimya. "About a hundred years ago."

Did he write about his design? It would be interesting to read.

"We have some of his writings, though not all of them! I can bring them next time."

Thank you.

How do you learn... Words? Just memorization?

"And practice! Amentan children are very good at picking up languages just by exposure, but for adults it's usually better to try to learn and practice explicitly."
