...I think I understood part of that. If I define 'person' intuitively, I still see the actuality of personhood as a spectrum. I would intuitively define it as something's capacity as an agent, to make choices of increasing complexity and nuance. But I understand what you mean by personhood in this context is not a spectrum. It's a different thing that there is not a different word for, and though the concept is shaped differently in my mind that is translating poorly.

I don't understand what you mean by being like 'the reverse of that case', though.

"- the example of disabled people is a particularly clear decoupling of personhood and capacity, but while they're less capable members of a species of people, Forever is a more capable member of a species of nonpeople."

So the capacity of Enkindled beings is somewhat decoupled from their personhood, because their species are not generally people?

"No, that's not what I'm saying. We do think Forever's a person based on his capacities. It's just an irregular case."

...I wonder if Enkindling is a special category- Well, that is something for you to think about, not me.

The adopted hatchling Katmem was kept entertained by the garden and estate and treasure-hunting for a while, and listens intently to science and piano lessons, but eventually remembers board games exist and asks about them again. Are they fun?

They can be! Here's a simple one their grandkids like.

He's happy to try the one they recommend. What are you supposed to do?

You roll dice and move your pegs on the board trying to land on these marked spots which move according to more die rolls!

...It's frustratingly hard to roll the dice but apart from that the game is fun!

You can think about what to do next and what the spots will do but you can't be sure. Is that on purpose?

"Yes! There are also games without any chance."

I don't mind the chance. Getting lucky and unlucky sometimes feels right.

"There are games that are entirely chance and have to do with deciding how much to risk on which outcomes, too."

There are a lot of games. I probably don't want to play ALL of them.

"I don't think anyone has. But there are lots of kinds and it makes sense to try several to learn more about what makes them fun for you,"

Let's play one of each kind then!

They have a card game that is nearly unadulterated chance with wagered tokens, and a board game with a predetermined setup of pawns and purely player-chosen moves from there.

Pure chance is interesting exactly once, and then just frustrating. The totally predetermined ones merit a lot of careful thought about strategy, head resting on the floor next to the board and tail slowly dragging side to side.

Awwwww.

Katmem runs around excitedly whenever he wins! Board games are fun.

I would like to go somewhere I can see the stars very well. There is a bench in the garden that is pretty good but a tree and the house still gets in the way. That's why I wanted to go on the roof a while ago. Is there a good place for that?

"We could take you out into the pastures if you like."

Ooh. Are those yours too? I thought the house and garden was all of it.

"We hire people to manage the land, but it's ours, and nobody's working at nighttime."

Having lots of land is impressive and good! I would like to see it.

"We can go for a walk around it while the sun sets and pick a good place to stargaze once it gets dark!"
