Next to the broom in the closet is a vacuum cleaner.

The house is already pretty clean, like they'd cleaned up before bringing Leo home, but he can pass some time sweeping.

He is not going to try to figure out how to use the vacuum cleaner right now!

He doesn't want to tidy up before he knows how things are organized, but he can sweep and dust and clean the bathrooms.

He can do that, but once he has done that it will be done, and Sasha's already taken care of the dishes from breakfast (other things this house has: a dishwasher).

Hm.

He is very unsure of what to do with free time. This is not an experience he has ever had before.

He tries dusting again more thoroughly this time.

Once he dusts more thoroughly there is still nothing else to do, but Sasha is working in the living room.

(They don't own a TV. They don't have anything that particularly needs tidying.)

They can always start spring cleaning!

He gets a bucket of water (from the sink!) and a sponge and starts scrubbing down the wall.

"We moved in three weeks ago," Sasha says. "If the wall needed cleaning I'd be very surprised."

"Sorry," Leo says. "I wasn't sure what to-- do."

"It's fine. — sorry, you can read any of the books on the shelves."

"Thank you," Leo says. He considers the books carefully and picks up a collection of short stories, in case someone wants to interrupt him.

Nobody seems particularly inclined to interrupt him, although Sasha occasionally glares at his screen and mutters words that a good boywife is not supposed to know.

Leo reads the rondel at the beginning of Smoke and Mirrors, and it's nice-- he's not sure that he has a head for poetry.

Leo reads Chivalry, and he's pretty sure he doesn't get it.

Leo reads Nicholas Was, and then he closes the book and stares out into space.

"...are you okay?"

"...I didn't know stories did that."

"What part are you at? — and do you want a hug?"

"Nicholas Was. And yes."

Sasha puts the laptop down and hugs him.

"Which thing do you mean, it's been a while since I read that one."

"It's..." He pauses. "It's a story about how things pretend to be good but they're really bad and-- it's only 100 words and there's so much in it and it's scary and." He pauses again. "I haven't read much in the past seven or eight years."

"...yeah. That would be a lot."

"Are all his stories like that."

"...most of them are sort of creepy and almost all of them are about things pretending, but they're not all that — flavor, I guess would be the word I'd use."

"I like it. --Like is a weird word to use. I don't know." He thinks. "It's not sweet."

"No," he agrees. "It isn't. Nothing he writes is."

"--can you tell me what things I should read?"

"I'd start with M Is For Magic — here, I'll find it for you —"
