Margaret is on her way to work, walking instead of flying today so she can drink her coffee without spilling it, when she sees the cryptid. She's a truly far-out one, no limbs to speak of, just a long snaky body with a mirror for a face. Margaret smiles at her and goes to walk on by, but the cryptid slithers right at her all of a sudden and--hits?--Margaret with the giant mirror. Except she doesn't experience getting whacked with a sheet of glass.
Oh good, it is the same one. "Hi! It's been good; I'm learning a lot. How about you?"
"Paperwork is like ants--you look away from one form, and when you look back it's summoned a dozen more."
She laughs. "Sadly, ships aren't as free of paperwork as they are of organic pests."
"So, was there anything in particular you wanted to meet about?"
"Get you introduced to some of the people you'll be working with, smooth over any concerns... Unfortunately either we're both early, or they're late."
"Sure."
There's a handful - a mixture of genders, all human, from a variety of different star nations, many of them ex-slaves or relatives thereof. Treasure X thinks they'll be mostly easy to work with; one is her adopted father, Falcon X, who is... A bit surly, highly focused, but generally reasonable.
Margaret diligently memorizes everyone's names and personalities. Surly, highly focused, and generally reasonable is a very respectable way to be.
"I don't think so, no." She looks at the door in anticipation.
And, soon enough, a man enters, trailed by a few others. The man introduces himself as Falcon X; the others have mostly also taken 'X' as a last name, but not everyone has - there's a Jenna Yu, for one.
Margaret's still going by Margaret Perry; it's not that strange of a name in this world and it's what she's used to. She introduced herself and says she's looking forward to working with everyone.
"We're looking forward to working with you as well." He takes a seat, as do the others. "How would you describe your specialty and powers?"
She explains her shapeshifting and its limits (can't get too human or too nonhuman, can't make inorganic things that continue to exist when she lets go of them), her powers (especially the danger-sense), and her recent training.
He starts going through expected salary, benefits, and how they might change over time, expected dangers - she won't be stuck on the front lines but their cause isn't popular off their planet...
None of it is outside what she had expected, and she's safer than a lot of people would be in her shoes. What's her first assignment going to be?
The danger sense will hopefully be irrelevant and the short-range precognition works best on moving objects, but if she immerses herself in a dataset she'll start getting prophesies about relevant events far away or in the future, which will be useful if acted on. Also she's pretty good at regular data analysis.
That seems the best place to start her, then. It'll be a learning curve, but - if nothing else, she'll provide an outside perspective.
That's fine by her! Analyzing large datasets is fun. She stares at computer screens and takes paper notes and when she wants notes in more than two dimensions she materialises delicate structures of silver wire and fiddles with them.
