The way Bella can suddenly do gymnastics after she and Soph have been moved in for a couple of weeks is weirdest.
Scratch that: the apparition that shows up in their bedroom, causing Bella to punch the bunk above her with surprising force in order to wake Soph and confirm that she's not hallucinating? That's weirdest. And so is what it has to say.
Soph sleepily wonders if Slayers have time to play softball. Bella opines that she does not think any of this is a good reason for her to start playing softball.
Soph goes to sleep. Bella stays up, at first, then she crashes too.
And the next day during her free period she's in the library, peering through the vampire books.
"It's not just sprinkling herbs and saying the right words. Magic is - you have to figure out if you can access it, and how, and that might happen right away or it might take time."
"Somebody's house? Dad works irregular but predictable-in-advance hours, I don't know what your situation is."
"I bet I could get Dad to flex on our curfew if I demonstrated some magic... But yeah. Where's the Magic Box?"
"Main drag," she says. "I'm surprised you don't know it."
"Haven't been here that long, spend most of my time inside, and last summer I didn't have the car," says Bella, starting to lead the way to the parking lot. "I've probably seen it, it just didn't stick."
Bella locates the car, which Charlie obtained for her (with the understanding that she'd share with Soph) as a sort of thanks-for-moving-in present. It is old and beat up but it turns on when she puts her key in the ignition, and there is room for all four of them. When everyone has seatbelts on she pulls out of the parking lot.
Delilah is quiet and definitely not watching Soph out of the corner of her eye in the back seat.
Bella drives in the utterly lawful manner of someone whose dad will inevitably hear about it if she is pulled over.
Soph doesn't seem to notice Delilah's watching or pointed not-watching; she's just looking out the window.
And now they are in the parking lot and out of the car! Where will their fantastic adventure next lead?
Which is stuffed full of books and crystals and herbs and tarot decks and things that sparkle and things that glow and there might be at least one psychedelic unicorn poster.
"Yeah, don't touch that," Delilah says over Soph's shoulder. "Not bullshit, might be cursed, better safe than sorry."
