They go inside.

It's a small apartment, but like the building, nice and well-taken-care of. Ade gestures at a sofa and goes for the landline.

Derek stands next to the couch and waits.

"Hi mom! You're never gonna guess! No, seriously, you won't guess. ...okay, how'd you guess? Well, uh—uh-huh, yeah. No, no—I mean, yes, but! No. Look, it's, we can finally talk to someone who knows what on Earth is going on! He's here. Mom—mom! No. Okay. When? Oh. Alright. Mmhm. Yes. Love you too, bye."

He turns around. "So, mom can't be home for a few more hours so I guess it's only me."

"That's fine."

He looks around.

"Is it just you and her?"

"Yeah. My father left us when I was little."

"No brothers or sisters?"

"Only if my father remarried, and if so I've never met them, why?"

"It seems lonely. It's good that you have her, though."

"So where do we start?"

"Well... Okay so I got turned about ten years ago, whoever turned me never showed up again, it was awful, I learned how to control the thing on my own, I've been running from hunters ever since. That's the extent of my knowledge."

"So you're an omega. Just what this town needs. You don't know anything? You haven't met any other packs?"

"I know bits and pieces of what I've heard from hunters, but they're scattered enough you should probably just assume I'm completely ignorant and unsocialized, yes."

"You're controlled, though. You have an anchor."

"Anchor?"

"The thing that stops you from shifting. The thing that's keeping you human right now."

"Oh. That's different between people? ...so that was why I couldn't—okay, makes sense. Yes, I have an anchor."

"An anchor will be some kind of emotion, or a particular mindset. Something strong, deeply rooted in who you are and what you've experienced. I use my anger."

That explains so much.

"I..." He bites his lower lip. "I hurt my mother. A long time ago. I—I use that."

"...I use my anger at the woman who burned down my childhood home, during a family reunion. Strong emotions, especially about something that matters. Anchors."

He looks at Derek. "I'm very sorry that happened to you."

"How do you handle full moons?"

"Very, very heavy chains."

"So you don't know nothing. Looks like you handled everything well. No pack, though. Why?"

"Um, I'm not sure how to get one? It's not like I had much luck finding other werewolves as opposed to just people who wanted to kill me."
