Desnia in the morning

Her mother puts the baby on the blanket on on the floor next to where she is sitting. He immediately starts crawling off of it.

“Do you remember your littlest brother’s new name?” her mother asks Asmodiea.

Asmodia replies promptly “Infirius!”

“And do you remember why he’s gotten a name now?”

She ponders this one. “Cause… you’re going away and I’m ‘posed to watch ‘im?”

Her mother beams at her. “That’s right! I’m going down into the village today and I won’t be back until it’s nearly dark. Infirius is now old enough to be without me all day, and that means he’s old enough to have a name. You’re responsible for keeping an eye on both your brothers and taking care of them today, and if something happens and you’re not sure what to do, father will be nearby all day so just step outside and holler for him.”

Asmodia nods seriously, clutching her favorite toy, a little rag doll, as her mother hugs her and then departs.

Desnia wakes up enough before dawn to change the baby before starting her morning prayers. She’ll feed him during.

She - wants to cry, and there’s no one here to observe her, so she lets herself do so, quietly. She’s not sure why she’s crying.

She hadn’t had a dream in a long while.

She… hadn’t been praying for dreams, but she had never prayed for dreams, and she had used to get them all the same.

She finishes changing the baby, kneels and begins to pray as she brings him up to nurse.

As a child, she learned one prayer to Desna, or at least one that she can still remember.

Choose a wish, find a dream, pick a wishing star. Let your hopes and spirits soar high and free and far. Believe in the impossible, then work and try to do. For only those who dare to dream can make a dream come true.

She hadn’t ever had the chance or much of a reason to learn any other ones - after she became a cleric, she’d mostly just… talk to Desna, about her day, about her dreams.

But just repeating that prayer for an hour over and over again suffices for getting her spells in the morning, and she’s… been mostly doing that one by rote for a while now, and more recently also half asleep, enough so that it feels like the individual words don’t mean anything to her anymore.

She’s not used to trying to talk to Desna anymore. She - tries a halting thanks for the dream, before switching back to praying by rote.

As she prays, she also thinks about what to prepare for today - and what to name her baby boy before she leaves him with the bodyguard.

Her usual cantrips are Detect Infernal Presence, Stabilize, Create Water and Mending. But probably Detect Magic makes more sense at the convention, it's probably a mistake that she hasn't been preparing it to try to track who is casting what and when.

For her first circle spells she decides on Detect Evil for checking the bodyguard and maybe getting a look at some of the delegates after the dropoff. Longstrider for her domain spell. She eventually settles on Obscuring Mist and Sanctuary for her other two spells.

She should talk to more clerics and learn what spells they're prepping while they're in the city.

... She should talk to more clerics in general, and learn things about the other Good gods.

Was it pathetic of her to have not tried harder to talk to more clerics in the past year and a half she could have done so? - But it made sense to be in places where other clerics weren't, she kept finding places that really desperately needed a single cleric but didn't have need for two!

... She probably could have talked to the paladins more, the Glorious Reclamation had saved her life but she hadn't wanted to talk to anyone right away. And then later she could have more sensibly overlapped with them than with another cleric but... she still hadn't wanted to talk to them. Because she's pathetic?

She focuses on the words that she's been repeating in the foreground of her thoughts.

Choose a wish, find a dream, pick a wishing star. Let your hopes and spirits soar high and free and far. Believe in the impossible, then work and try to do. For only those who dare to dream can make a dream come true.

The hour ends. Desnia has her spells.

She doesn't have a name yet, for her boy.

She's not good at names, as might be evident.

Perdó? For forgiveness?

She flinches a little. Maybe too much of a reminder.

It had a nice mouth-feel to it though.

Perhaps Pere?

She shrugs to herself. It'll do. He's probably little enough that it won't harm him if she changes her mind, gives him another one. Lots of people have many names.

"Little Pere! How do you like it?" she asks, booping him on the nose.

He waves his hands, gurgles happily.

She heads out to see whether she can find anyone else to talk to before it's time for dropping him off.
