There is a vast field of rock broken up by occasional piles of detritus and heaps of trash. There are mountains of it, and the smell is correspondingly vile. Most of what's left seems to be rusting metal, glass, and something weird and shiny and flexible.

Safety is more complicated, magic can protect you against weather, against most sorts of wild animals and against some kinds of attacks by other people. People are creative though, there's no such thing as a perfect defense and there's limits to the magnitude of attack magic can protect against."
