Ilda’s time in Halmyris is interrupted

She sees more of the city, talks to more people.  Their actual would be residence is in terrible of repair, but overall she’s convinced the city is a good fit and Nuria seems like an excellent potential ally.

It had been almost a week since she arrived, and she was actually thinking of ending her time in Halmyris, having seen everything she needs to see and more, although the letter did allow her up to two weeks.

The decision is made for her when she receives some urgent news…

He comes running up. "Hey! You! Monk Girl! Come to the Castle at once!"

Shit, is this how she dies?  There are a lot of things that might demand her immediate attention without being ambush attempts… they could just kill her in her sleep, so she’ll act as if this isn’t a murder attempt.

“Of course, is it that urgent?  Are you good to run?”

Ilda is quite fast on her feet.

He's somewhat out of breath, but tries to keep pace. "Yeah! The Condesa's father got some news, I wasn't told what."

She’ll slow her pace just enough he can keep up, and they’ll be back at the castle quickly.

Núria's waiting by the gate, and pulls her inside. Her hair's no longer in perfect bun, and her topcoat is unevenly buttoned. "Miss Ilda! They've killed her! They've killed the Condesa!"

“In Westcrown?  What’s happened there?  Assassinations?  Civil war?  Another round of riots?”

A noble ought to have enough guards to easily survive riots, the earlier riots weren’t bold or organized enough to risk going after nobility instead of merchants or bakers or whatever overcharging on food.  But the Condesa only had a few guards…

"There was a riot. Archery, I heard. It must have been a flight of arrows strong enough to overwhelm her defences. They say two of her guards were killed. The Queen says she's going to bring her back to life. The Cond- Condesa's Father is sending a carriage with more guards. I'm going- and you should too."

“I was just considering if I had finished my job here, of course I’ll go back with you all.  I’m surprised a riot would be aggressive enough to go after a Condesa.  There was riots in the city back after the Four Day War, but they were like… going after bakers over high bread prices, or moderately rich but non-noble people formerly associated with diabolists.”

It’ll be good to have Nuria along at least.

Núria is tapping her finger, very quietly and rapidly, on her clipboard. "We'll be leaving in an hour. I need to pack, I'll- I'll leave you to it!" She strides away, her riding boots clacking loudly on the flagstones.

She’s ready to go in less than a half hour, she didn’t bring much to being within.

She's arranged two araba carriages, and some reasonable horseflesh, and mounts hers up with some trepidation- horses generally loathe her, for some reason- when the Conde's Father opens a window in the oriel.

Don Danilo Velacruz i Fernand stands there, his belly protruding through the high window, breathing with a visible pure, sheer rage.

"Knights of Halmyris!"

"I stand before you- enraged! My daughter – your Condesa – was struck down in the streets like a common criminal. She, who bears our Blessed Ancestral Gifts has been murdered by rabble!"

"Iomedae herself will undo this affront, will breathe life back into her body. But make no mistake – I will not wait for divine justice for these bandits! You who now march to the capital under Lady Núria and Sir Bernat– you are not merely guards. You are the instruments of our Justice. While our position here demands I stay, you shall be my eyes, my sword, and my shield in the capital"

He breathes, and glances at them.

"Lady Nuria, you are my daughter's most trusted advisor – you know her mind perhaps better than I- advise her towards Safety! Sir Bernat- Lead these warriors with the same wit and loyalty you have shown all your life."

"Protect her with your lives! Now go! Protect her! Kill her Enemies!"

He’s getting really worked up considering she’s going to be raised.  Maybe he cares about his daughter or something?  Or maybe it’s a nobility pride thing?  Like ‘how dare the common rabble assail a noble’?  Yeah that would make more sense.

She memorizes the speech as best she can (although it’s getting to be a lot with all the other things she’s memorized about the city) for future Dia analysis.

She doesn’t know how to ride a horse, so she’s in the carriage.  It’s easier than walking, but still uncomfortable, and it’s going to be a long trip back.

Núria taps her horse in the sides, the carriages rattle away, and they're off.
