Can't count that high.

Consider the set of works consisting of the longest published work in the world for each world. How many works are there in that set whose word count is divisible by a hundred million?

He relays this question to Bar.

You do realize that many worlds' works do not have 'wordcount' as a feature?

Bits. They have bits, right? You use a certain amount of space to store them, or we would have to, if you sent them to us?

That depends on encoding, and I am not a demon and do not do format conversion so it's just as likely that any given work is encoded as clay tablets.

"...outsourcing from here," he says to Maglor.

"Restricting to the set of universes who've invented computers and further to the set of longest-works that are available in computer format?"

Shall I assume that if I protest that there are many ways to build computers you will simply have me narrow it down to those that do in fact reduce to binary?

Within the applied scope the answer to the original question is and then it's a stupidly large number in condensed scientific notation.

Imliss puts her head in her folded arms and starts laughing tinged with hysteria

He puts an arm around her and starts murmuring to Maitimo, nonsense lullabyish syllables.

This is the scene that greets him and Cam when they come downstairs.

"Is - something wrong?"

Imliss doesn't stop laughing. She does pick up the napkin with the large number and wave it like a white flag.

"We got an order-of-magnitude estimate on how many worlds there are. Well, how many worlds with computers, now we'll just have to get a percentage-of-worlds-with-any-published-works-that-have-computers-of-the-right-format. People are coping in proportion to how much they think the average life is worth living. Hi."

"...hi." Pause. "Hey, Bar, what would strike you as an unusually high suicidality rate by multiversal standards."

Perhaps .2%.

"Percentage of worlds with people who can die, and don't believe there's an afterlife where they're judged for their deeds and so on?"

We have circled back to the same sorts of problems I typically have with these questions.

"Cáno, come up with a procedure for random sampling from Bar -"
