So the diagram actually isn't on the floor. It's on a table. The table is in a room with high enough ceilings that you can stand on top of the table if you so choose, but why would anyone do that? Chanai, who is alternately sketching the vaguely circular array he wants to use for a spell and using the space around the edges of the same paper for notetaking, is sure not expecting anyone to stand on the table. In fact, none of the people in this room are expecting anyone to do that.
She points. They're at the southern end of a small continent. "Can you make bodies and do they have souls in them if you do?"
"- so, I'm not used to thinking of souls as being a thing, per se, but I can make bodies and they don't have minds."
"As you might imagine demons are pretty hard to pay but I am presently in the market for a native guide!"
"I can offer you that. How many people can I get out of their jars for how much native guidance?"
"...all the people who are in all the jars for the amount of native guidance that occurs during the process of reaching all those jars, specifying what kinds of bodies they want, etcetera?"
"Okay, well, I'm going to go get my great-great-great grandmother and Chanai can - actually, you should also make Chanai whatever materials he asks for so he can cast spells. Normal spell materials include things like herbs and crystals."
"Yeah, Chanai is good at magic. I've got my great-great-great grandmother and a random orphan and a mystery collection my great-great-great grandmother could probably identify and my mother but she's an asshole and can go last, and by 'last' I mean let's save every dying person in Zorvey first. I'll think how best to do that - we can't do it for free because even if spell materials are free and bodies are free Chanai's time isn't free, but we can be cheaper than a death lottery."
"Do other people with skills like Chanai's both exist and want material objects?"
"Yeah. And more people could do the spell we'll need over and over than could do everything Chanai can do. Anyway, ask him and Tyela your questions for a second, I'll be right back."
"So hi," Cam says to Chanai and Tyela, "my name's Cam and apparently I'm here to end aging and disease."
"It began as absolutely nothing forever in all directions. Then a bunch of us started showing up and making things, so now it's got lots of things, anything anybody spent a moment wanting. - so it's really really tacky."
"Not at all! And the humans in the world where I'm usually summoned to do have aging and disease but they also have an afterlife. It's not that nice but it'll keep till somebody figures out how to get there."
"Humans here reincarnate but it's not the same. Mermaids don't even reincarnate, as far as anyone knows."
