why are there so many secret evil people

Victòria is so sick of dealing with secret Evil people. Openly Evil people are also bad, but at least if someone is openly Evil you know where you stand from the beginning, you don't think they're on your side only for them to tell you that they burned down houses full of innocent children.

The good news is, apparently it's not actually that hard to figure out who's hiding the fact that they're secretly Evil? She'd assumed from the initial explanation that you had to be really powerful to notice; if it was easy to see that you were hiding it, hiding it wouldn't be very useful.

But Blai is apparently only third circle, and also she's pretty sure she recognized the spell he was casting — Calistria's granted it to her a few times since she arrived in Westcrown, not that she had any idea how to interpret what it was saying. Normally she'd stay away from someone who ran a Worldwound fort — soldiers and powerful wizards are both bad news — but it turns out that, despite being Lawful, Iomedae is actually pretty neat. If Blai is anything like Valia, he should be fine.

"Delegate Artigas?" she says, having tracked him down after the Diabolism Committee wrapped for the day. "I was wondering if you could show me how to tell if someone is using Undetectable Alignment to hide the fact that they're Evil."

"- unfortunately your erstwhile committee member has run away, so I can't just suggest you stare at her through Detect Magic for a while. I could... try to draw it?"

"That would be great!"

"I never got very far in trying to make Prestidigitation do its full range of things, so I can't do it in color." But he has notepaper and can draw the outline of the spell and write in colors and arrows to compensate for the all-black ink.

She watches intently. She has a few questions, some of which vaguely suggest that she doesn't know very much about magical theory.

He doesn't either. He's just seen this one spell on demons enough times to tell it apart from Protection from Arrows.

Well, she can't even do that much. Admittedly, delegates secretly protecting themselves from arrows seems like less of an issue than delegates secretly hiding the fact that they're Evil.

"...This might be a silly question, but why do the demons need to hide that they're Evil? Wouldn't you be able to tell the difference between a normal soldier that you see every day and a demon?"

"A lot of different kinds of people worked together on the Worldwound, but very few of them were Chaotic Evil specifically. Also, outsiders have particularly strong auras; if they were disguising themselves as one of the soldiers, they'd have to hide it even if the soldier in question was Chaotic Evil."

"So it's like, they'd need to know twice as many spells to get away with it if they were disguising themselves as soldiers? And if you used Detect Magic on them, you'd see the disguise either way, so they wouldn't be giving themselves away for no reason?"

"I'm not sure what you're imagining. There are a lot of different kinds of demon; someone going around with Detect Evil or Detect Chaos will spot one that isn't concealing it, and won't spot one that is concealing it. Going over everyone with Detect Magic is an extra step, sometimes skipped. Even the first step is sometimes skipped."

"...well, at first I was imagining a demon just... flying up to your fort, looking like a demon but hiding that it was Evil, but I guess that didn't really make much sense. Now instead I'm confused about why you wouldn't check everyone with Detect Magic every time if this was a big problem, it's an orison. —I assume there is some reason, just, I've never been to the Worldwound so I don't know."

"I did. But some people didn't. It takes several moments of concentration and people will object to standing out in the cold before they're let in from their patrol, if they are permitted to object or very worked up about it."

Blink blink.

"—I never got to the point of learning wizard cantrips, is the spell still going to work the same for me?" Probably she should have asked that earlier but she didn't think to.

"The only wizard cantrip I have even a bit of is Prestidigitation and almost all I can do with it is make minimally distinguishable chess pieces. I think your cleric spells will work like mine."

Now she just looks confused.

"Perhaps I didn't understand your question."

"—Oh, are you from Lastwall or, uh, the other one, I forget how you say it, starts with an M?" He doesn't look like he's from Lastwall but she doesn't have a better guess.

"You might be thinking of Mendev. I wouldn't be qualified to be a delegate if I weren't Chelish." SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT

She looks incredibly confused! That doesn't make any sense!!!

"Is there anything else I can help you with?" he says, offering the drawing.

She still looks confused but she goes back to asking questions about whether the way Undetectable Alignment is shaped changes at all depending on whether it's on a thirteen-year-old-human-shaped person or a demon-shaped person or a Delegate Ibarra-shaped person.

He has seen demons shaped several different ways and can speculate based on that.
