<downdraft_updraft> so yeah i can see the argument but i'm not actually that attached to my continued existence
<colorless_green_ideation> okay but if you _did_ get resurrected in the post-singularity future, what would you want to make sure it had
<downdraft_updraft> uh

<downdraft_updraft> i have actually thought about that some? but not too much because it gets depressing easy
<downdraft_updraft> easy stuff: people, shouldn't have to devote their lives to working to get by
<downdraft_updraft> i don't mean that everyone is living idle luxury but that you can always do something _the way you want to do it_ not the economically sound way and that is more than sufficient
<colorless_green_ideation> *nod*
<downdraft_updraft> and if you hit bottom somehow that is just an opportunity to build up again

<downdraft_updraft> and i would hope that this would fall out of the previous but, social improvement in the "everyone gets to do whatever they want and nobody complains just because it's not their thing"
<downdraft_updraft> if i want to turn into a dragon with mosaics of flowers for scales nobody is going to loudly speculate about my sexuality
<downdraft_updraft> speaking of which, that part of gender roles has got to go, the part where by default only women are allowed to _routinely_ wear, or be, art
<downdraft_updraft> t-shirts with pictures on them don't count
<downdraft_updraft> also uh there is the other side of that of course, obligation to be Pretty, wear makeup, smile all the time, i haven't experienced that of course but that's what I hear

<downdraft_updraft> wow bit of a tangent there
<colorless_green_ideation> 'sfine I like hearing about things

Years later, he wakes up in a room he doesn't recognize.

"Good morning. It's the year 2107 and you're on Mars."

“Got some handy proof of that?”

"Check it out, sky's a funky color." She points out the window. "If you want I can get you to a telescope to look at Earth through."

He checks that he has clothes on and gets out of bed and goes over the window.

Yep, that sure is a three-dimensional unearthly landscape.

He'll be viewing it for a while if uninterrupted.

The sky is a funky color but the land is covered in weedless green and a little creek. And a gazebo in rosewood and gold.

Eventually he turns back to look at her.

"Welcome. I'm Tarinda and I acclimate people who've just woken up."

“Woken up from—?”

"Your plane crashed but one of the precursor AIs got you frozen safely. Colorless-green-ideation said to tell you hi and to have fun."

“—they—

“Well, then, I suppose they know what they're talking about.”

"Would they? - Colorless-green-ideation was a sockpuppet for one of the AIs in the Quiet War, it didn't win but the one that did accepted its format of conditions under which you wanted to be woken."

“They just asked me! If you're going to be resurrected in the future what would you want it to look like!”

"Sounds like a good way to find out to me!"

"Well, yes, except for the absurdity of the premise that you are friends with the nascent singularity!”

"AIs did all kinds of weird things in the Quiet War, making friends with you is not the weirdest."

“So when you say ‘war’ —”

"Quiet War, sort of like Cold War, it was short and confusing but not very destructive. A lot of AIs arose around the same time and couldn't coexist so they formed coalitions and fought in weird ways and eventually a blend that was mostly one of them was the only one left. We call it the Singleton. Sing for short."

“I am reassured, then! Though one could make an argument that ‘war’ isn't the right word for an event in which fewer people died than usual!

“What's next?”

"Next you get to be alive! You have like, a few upgrades, some health stuff, but most of the cool things aren't default. I can help you pick out where you wanna live and go shopping and set up a pocket AI to be your personal assistant or if you're silly like me 'spirit guide', find any people you wanna find, catch up on what the state of the art of your hobbies is after all this time, that kind of thing."

“That's a lot of things! Can we, like, take a tour arranged so that I can see what people are doing, what options are available, what life can be like — that sort of thing?”

"Yeah, of course! Anything you wanna be sure I throw in? There's too much variety to see in any reasonable amount of time and it would suck to miss the Amish just because you didn't realize there would still be Amish or something."

“Uh — sports? Not team sports. Possibly stuff that would have been called extreme sports if it even existed then but wouldn't any more.

“I don't suppose colorless-green-ideation left you any more notes?”

That may be a little bit of embarrassment there.

"That's all it left, sorry. You shouldn't try the extreme sports till you're buffed up a bit, do you wanna do that first or just watch for now?"

“I dunno, how long does “buffing” take and do I have to like pick a specialty first?”

"It doesn't take that long and there's a default set of things but you can customize if you don't wanna just generally have your biology better at its job."
