"Take her; I'll handle that group."

Naomi is taken. Her setup is unrealistically fast. Thanks, magic. "I can receive telepathic messages from twice the distance of normal magical girls, but my transmission range is shorter. Just so you know."

"Cool. Try not to hit me while you're sniping." And Kara poofs off.

She's normally more chipper than this. But it's been a very disorienting day. She's incorporating -- more information than she had expected to. Tonight was going to be for her home computers, tomorrow morning for testing wireless download/upload speeds with magic. Instead she found out she has instinctual knowledge of how to operate a particular kind of sniper rifle, and that the organization her friend has been looking for might be composed of demon-fighting teenage girls with superpowers.

She wants to just tell them. She can, even. Her wish gave her the ability to record everything she senses, after this is done she could just go home and --

... no. She'll wait. Later she'll have more. She can stick with this for now.

She keeps a watch.

There's a lot of demons on the street below, fighting a handful of girls. She could probably pick some of the outlying crowd off.

She's cautious. She only makes shots she knows she can land. Her visor gives her lots of helpful information about how fast they're moving, among other things.

Then she can thin out the pack a bit before Ellie returns, bearing a handful of eerie black cubes.

When the pack is gone she cleans up and waves at the rest of the group.

"These are called grief cubes. Summon your gem."

Ellie holds one of the cubes next to it. The faint tinge of darkness infusing Naomi's gem is sucked out, and the cube becomes blacker.

Oh. Oh.

She giggles. "Thaaat was something. Oh, man, maybe next time I could even set up inside! ... if there's room, anyway. I guess there isn't in most buildings."

"Not typically. Maybe if you come up with a close-quarters technique and practice."

"Maybe I could! The visor has a lot of features I wasn't expecting -- and there were new interface options when there were demons versus when there weren't -- I wonder if I could change it myself, consciously? Or maybe change the kinds of bullets I fire or guide them with magic or something, I'm not sure what's most efficient yet --"

"You don't have to figure everything out tonight."

"True! I probably don't even have enough information to start prioritizing -- oh, we should probably go to the headquarters thing to get an information packet. Or it can wait if it's too late, I don't know anything about your schedule."

"My schedule is clear."

"Ooh, nice! I suppose you did that when you found out you were going to get a mentee. Nice meeting you all!" She turns around and waves at the other girls.

They wave back from below.

"Let's keep going then. Keep up." And she runs and jumps to the next roof.

Naomi keeps up.

They can make good time on rooftops. Their destination is one of the taller buildings downtown, they land in the alley behind and change out of their costumes.

"We'll go in the front."

"Right. I'll follow you."

The smartglass in the lobby displays a series of tasteful landscapes interspersed with corporate logos as Ellie palms the scanner to open the door.

Naomi doesn't recognize all of them but she looks anyway, systematically, because she knows she'll be able to compare them later --

She follows.
