It is 4633 AR and the Vivas estate is burning. Three decades the Chelish Civil War has raged, and there is still no end in sight. All of Count Gabriel Vivas' gambles have failed: his sons are dead, his holdings destroyed. All he managed to save is on his person. He does not have teleport — nobody in their family line has ever manifested it — but he does have dimension door. He grabs his daughter and appears eight hundred feet from the estate in the forest, which is also burning. He still has enough spells like for two castings of protection from energy. They flee.

The years pass by. Gabriel and his daughter Estel spend decades traveling, never really settling down anywhere for more than a couple of years. Eventually, like all mortals, Gabriel dies in his old age. They are traveling through a particularly backwater part of Molthune when he passes away. Estel gets stuck there due to a local resistance against the Molthune government and never leaves. A few years later she has a fling with an elf.

It is 4657 AR and Daniel Vivas is born in what would become Tamran. His mother speaks to him of the great glory of their family, and of the ruin that destroyed their family and the soul of Cheliax. His father is absent.

In his late teens the flame of sorcery ignites within him, as it did for his grandfather. While there is always work for spellcasters, fire magic is truly the best at one thing: destruction. He joins up with a small-time adventuring crew and has various escapades. He works with the resistance whenever Molthune's army comes around to invade Nirmathi territory. In his off-time he puts on fireworks shows for the locals.

He's in his early thirties when makes third circle. His elderly mother dies shortly after. After a particularly grueling encounter he decides to quit adventuring — it only gets more dangerous from here and it's not like he was ever going to be an archmage. When he fights with the resistance he tries his best to only engage at long range. He makes something of a name for himself doing shows with fire and illusions. The money is nothing like what he got before, but it's safer.

It is 4713 AR when the Four Day War happens, and it's not very long after when the letter arrives:

Are YOU the heir to a Chelish county?

(or something like that)

Daniel wasn't expecting this! He had heard — everyone had heard — of the chaos and fall of Infernal rule in Cheliax, but he didn't expect the new queen to restore the old nobility.

He is quite interested in this "Constitutional Convention" thing. He isn't entirely sure what a constitution... is, but perhaps it's like a more formal version of the "Common Rule" Andoran talks about so much — although it'll probably end up much worse and have a bunch of terrible slavery provisions or something, this is Cheliax. Maybe he can help make it less of a disaster, and his mother would have wanted him to restore their family.

And so, after the winter passes into the new year, he sells his home and travels to Korvosa, where he buys passage on a ship taking the long journey to Westcrown.
