art is a matter of subtractions,
as any good sculptor will say.
behind and inside (to still-whole things' dismay)
can you find, where they hide, the pieces and fractions
composing an object worth viewing,
creating a project worth doing,
developed by cutting away.
discipline, then, is the crux and the key,
elision the foremost objective
empty your soul through a colander's strains,
fishing out flaws and rehousing remains -
get left with your brand-new perspective
hello unrecognizable me
hollowed and broken and melted and moldered,
ironed and mended and straightened and soldered,
irritations removed and new graces shouldered.
is it different for a project than a heart;
is it right to view one as static and lovable;
is it wrong to see them as growing, adjustable.
is there a difference in revision and vision?
it is different, yes, and the difference is art.
it's not hard to see all the world in these ways
jagged edges exist to be sanded
leave off sugarcoated allays, it's
more proper and right to be candid.
nothing is gained without forfeit
not something most people admit, I hear.
only lovely things are worth loving, my dear,
so lace yourself into that corset;
so shave off your pieces that ill fit.
we'll make you an object worth seeing;
we'll make you a person worth being.
