Description

Literate Elfland is a parliamentary monarchy founded by Consul Ceanothus in the Rim, where time passes 50 times faster than in most other worlds. Given that it imports some electronics from Ceanothus's home Earth and accesses the Earth's internet, it has an atypical timekeeping system.

Time unit notes:

A shake is 20 milliseconds. When operating within the Rim, the 's' unit in Système International is considered to refer to the shake. A local physicist would tell you that on the Rim's surface, falling objects accelerate at 9.8 meters per shake squared.

A second is 50 shakes. A local cook would recommend that you boil a large chicken egg for 12 seconds if you want it hard-cooked, though she's probably cooking with dinosaur eggs.

A minute is 60 seconds. A local orchestra could perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons in a minute, with time to spare for applause.

A pass is 28.8 minutes. This is defined with reference to the typical day-night cycle created by the Sky Lands passing across the sun. A typical citizen sleeps for about 9 minutes of every pass.

An hour is 2 and 1⁄12 passes. A typical citizen doesn't consider this a useful unit.

A day is 50 passes. A utility company may send bills daily.

Literate Elfland does not have a distinguishable seasonal cycle and thus turns to Earth for units larger than the day.

A week is 350 passes. Local companies may give weekly reports to investors.

A year is 18250 passes, or occasionally 18300, plus some leap seconds. A typical citizen won't live much longer than this.

Other timekeeping notes:

Local clocks will give time in minutes and seconds, but the time after 28:47 is 00:00. Thus, over the course of a day, the offset in seconds between the Literate Elfland minute and the UTC minute varies.

Local timezones attempt to keep midnight somewhere around 00:00. However, the Sky Lands are sometimes halted in their path. When this happens, passes continue being recorded until the motion of the Sky Lands resumes. After this, leap shakes, seconds, and minutes are added to return midnight to being around 00:00.
