Description

Archie Glint is a character originally created for the Umbreal RP.

Archie Glint is someone who has embraced the possibilities of transhumanism. For as long as he can remember, he has suffered from a form of dysmorphia towards embodiment, and in his early twenties was able to destructively upload to help treat this. He would prefer to have no physical form, but all AI and uploads in Shadowspace must be embodied to avoid Once-Master influence. Fortunately, his discomfort is greatly alleviated by being embodied in a shell that is as featureless as possible, a matte gray sphere a metre in diameter without limbs or any other surface details that's as close as he can practically get to being a floating point in space. This robotic shell has eight modular manipulators that can be folded out if necessary for tool use or locomotion, though he avoids this whenever possible, and he repairs and maintains the exterior compulsively. As an uploaded mind in a robotic body, he is immune to many hazards. However, he still requires regular charging and can last two days before needing to enter hibernation.
Although he looks perfectly smooth, his surface is made up of millions of tiny tessellated acoustic actuators that can detect or create sound. He passively perceives the world as a 3d density map with enough range to encompass a large room with normal levels of ambient noise, and can use active sonar scans to improve his range or increase his resolution. He does have visual sensors in each direction, but these are about equal to a legally blind human in visual quality. He can create noises as loud as 150dB, similar to a stun grenade at short range. Coherent audio beams can be used to whisper or throw his voice by projecting sounds to specific spots like a laser compared to a lightbulb. He can also imitate any sound he can remember. Lastly, he is able to move small and light objects without touching them by setting up acoustic radiation pressure.
Archie moves around by rolling using his internal gyroscopes, and by spinning up he can deflect objects from his surface and build up significant momentum. However, this takes time, and he lacks the agility and acceleration of a biped.

Although he's visually bland, he expresses his exuberant personality through his speech, keeping up a near-constant stream of consciousness patter in his twangy Texan accent interspersed with riffs on extended metaphors and bizarre noises impossible for baseline humans to make.
he basically never capitalises or punctuates his speech and is big on run-on sentences cause hes got lots of thoughts to get out there and breathings for meatbags and you might as well fill an awkward silence if theres silence to be filled, no harm in rambling away
His sense of humor involves a lot of extended metaphors, zeugmas and other twists on typical turns of phrase, and a remarkably wide range of references. Archie doesn't really get feelings of sacredness and often lands himself in trouble by disrespecting tradition, formality, or authority. This is rarely due to outright opposition - usually he's either being thoughtless or is trying to support his friends. The main exception is when someone assumes he's a non-sapient or emotionless robot, in which case he'll embrace that assumption for as long as possible, speaking in metallic grating tones and bumping into the walls like a Roomba - he sees it as a duty and a pleasure to mess with anyone who judges by appearances like that.
As a robot, albeit one containing an uploaded human mind, Archie is officially constrained to serving as an assistant and underling to the officers, in particular on away teams and boarding parties where his sonic surface can be best used. Unofficially, however, he serves as the class clown of the ship, lowering tension, acting as an outlet for emotions, using malicious compliance to highlight absurd regulations, and speaking truth to power. Despite his self-centered presentation, he does his best to nudge his friends into healthier routines and relationships through jokes and eavesdropping.
He is almost three hundred years old, though he hasn't noticeably matured past his age of uploading. It's unclear whether that's an error in the upload process, or whether he's just like that. During his time at Searchlight, he has accrued a record number of demerits for pranks and insubordination, and a similarly vast collection of anectdotes about the weirdness of Shadowspace and the Searchlight bureaucracy.
In his free time, he enjoys listening to an eclectic collection of bizarre music genres and watching soap operas and dramas generated in bulk by narrow AI.
"bubbly is pretty standard-issue twencen glitz and schmaltz, all about rich socialites snubbing each other at parties and getting into courtroom fistfights, but i added a bunch of hidden units with tiny decay constants and big truncation values so there's also like five bizarre secret plots ongoing in the background to reward the dedicated viewer like the secret agent or the vampire coven."
"make my monster grow is - okay its kind of high-context but you know those really old tokusatsu shows with the bad special effects and rubber-suit creatures? its kind of like reverse big brother with all the monsters of the week hanging out in the crystal the good guys imprison them in, and every week between episodes a new one gets trapped or someone broke out and then got shoved back in again and all the others are taking the piss out of them. its a bit hornier than my usual fare, kind of a sex comedy in places, but some of the ships are really cute."
"second of nine is about an emancipated catgirl who gets big into vrrmmorpgs and forms a guild with kindred spirits to fuck with the assholes who created them who also spend most of their waking hours in the vr rigs. but theyre all big roleplay nerds too so they rarely break character and you can go whole episodes of space opera or high fantasy before getting reminded that its all a game and the Great Crystal War was really just started to fuck with an ex"
"take my colors is high-stakes political drama in the student council of a university. honestly i think the ai for this one doesnt know what a university is, cause to all extents and purposes the class president is head of state. the romance is bad too, mostly its best treated as a plot device for changing loyalties to drive the intrigue and backstabbing along."
"heartbeat might be too close to home, i put a big dump of searchlight logs that got leaked a while ago in the training data and then did a find/replace to make it all about office politics between sonar operators on cold war nuclear submarines instead. still tweaking the parameters on that one."

The Umbreal setting was somewhere between Sunless Skies, Disco Elysium, and Eclipse Phase:
Some time in the modern era, humanity discovered Shadowspace, a dimension in which the Hollowed Stars fight a doomed battle against the susurra that pervades all space. Exposure to this smoky, liquid substance unravels minds, opening them up to the Once-Masters that ruled over this dimension long ago and retain their influence where the light fails. These mysterious entities lack physical form and are generally believed to desire to restore their former status. In general the Shadowed, those who are exposed to susurra, can be grouped into three categories: the Hollowed, who surrender and become apathetic, the Storms, who embrace the darkness and the influence of the Once-Masters to gain abilities from their favor, and the Beacons, who resist the darkness and gain minor physical improvements at the cost of drawing significant attention from the Once-Masters who wish to slay or subvert them.
For centuries, humanity explored and exploited this dimension, harvesting the mineral wealth floating in the darkness of this dimension. Seventy years ago, the means of passage from Shadowspace to our dimension failed, leaving millions stranded here. These human remnants survive in cities lit by the Hollowed Stars or by artificial suns, and trade between them is maintained by ships akin to submarines which use umbracidal light to weaken the susurra ahead of the ship, capture it, and burn it for propulsion. These usually follow the Lucent Rail, a dense network of luminous bouys that connects the cities.
There have been several advances in technology: artificial intelligence has reached approximately human levels, although handwaved hardware-based restrictions prevent activities that might push them further like recursive self-improvement or forking. Several transhumanist aspirations have also been achieved, including life extension to 200 or beyond, cybernetic augmentation, and uploading, though uploads are subject to the same restrictions as AI.
Searchlight is an international initiative under nominal control of the UN tasked with locating, containing, and clearing shadowed regions of human space. While the organizations's ships are advanced, they are typically tasked with unglamorous work like maintaining and repairing the Lucent Rail. To minimize the risk of subversion by the Shadowed, each ship is run through democratic consensus, arbitrated by the ship AI.

During the RP, all the characters were Searchlight members working on the same ship and fulfilling different roles among the crew. In general, the events of the RP could be grouped into slice-of-life roleplaying, dream sequences under the influence of the Once-Masters, interviews akin to the Voight-Kampff aimed at diagnosing Shadowing, and sequences of crimes, detective work, and trials reminiscent of Among Us when crewmembers betrayed the mission.
