Most people can't read, but it is very important to Maitimo's father that he learn to read, and so as soon as the final version of the letters was settled on he has been practicing, diligently. He has read all of the things that have yet been written and written a few himself. His handwriting is so pretty. His parents are so proud.

It is the mingling and the sky is blazing ultraviolet. He is sitting in a room that opens on the courtyard, a pretty mahogany wardrobe ajar behind him, working on his penmanship and singing and watching the waterfall bubble.

Oh.

Thank you.

...how does she - doesn't want to talk over the singing -

For what?

Letting us - grieve with you.

You're welcome but I don't know why you want to.

Because they are dead and that is horrible and maybe gone and that would be the most horrible thing in the whole world and it is - good to have people around to be sad and angry and remind us that we are right to be sad and angry. At least for me it's good. It'd be worse to be alone.

She wipes her eye with the edge of her sleeve a little.

They sing.

I wasn't really allowed.

To grieve, you mean?

To think they shouldn't be dead.

Well. They shouldn't be dead.

She nods. She cries.

Okay hug.

He hugs her and sings.

And she cries on the last bit of her bread thing.

They have all their things and could go back but he thinks maybe staying where everybody is singing is better.

For a while, anyway.

We can go home when you are ready.

Eventually she's done crying for the time being.

She looks at her cried-on bread thing. Where do I put this.

Little boxes with the flowers on top, inside them things decay and will turn into dirt for the flowers.

She didn't think compost worked that fast. She puts her bread thing in a flower box.

Decay works as fast as the Valar want which is usually not at all.

That seems like autumn would get very piles-of-leaves-y very fast but maybe they have something for that. This place is so magic.
