When Hyacinth comes home to her new apartment for the first time after a long day at university, it's to the sight of moving bots just finishing dropping off the last of her stuff and moving furniture into place. The full-immersion VR pod her parents gave her is safely hooked up in the pod room, her bed is in her bedroom, she has chairs and a desk and some bookshelves. Clothes are mostly still in boxes, waiting to be hung up in the closet. Holovid and a cozy chair occupy the living room. She doesn't have any food in the small kitchen yet.
She brings up her interface again. "So I was going to take Splash Spell, Held Spell, Extinguish, and... a mana efficiency node? I'm not certain about the mana efficiency node."
"I'm thinking seriously about bouncing or turning shots..."
She frowns.
"No, I think that's style over substance at this point. I need basic reliability before I start going for fancy tricks."
"Okay."
She squeezes back, then locks in Extinguish, Held Spell, Splash Spell, and a Mana Efficiency node from Persist.
Annnnnd locked.
Any new ability slots for her, or is she still stuck with her starting four?
Since she's still comparatively low Anamnesis, she can have a new slot. As a treat.
(Actually the acquisition rate is just curved, but eh.)
Just what she's always wanted!
"New slot," she reports to Sable. "I'm up to five now."
She flicks through her list of abilities.
Five slots. One should be her enhanced fire resistance.
She arranges [Splash Spell + Held Spell + Bolt + Fire + Mana Efficiency] into one monstrous ability.
C'mon, Intricacy, you can do this...
It takes a bit of tweaking, but with her high-for-her-level Intricacy giving her access to a better node graph in the ability builder she can manage it. The ability gets marked as valid. Would she like to lock it and name it?
She would love to lock and name it.
Hmmm, what name to choose...
It can be Flare. That seems to cover all its uses. And it'll replace her standard firebolt.
Next up she'll try and lock...
[Extinguish + Fire + Bolt + Splash Spell + Held Spell + Mana Efficiency], that can be Quell Flames.
After that... She'll add Mana Efficiency and Held Spell to Repel and just call it Repel II.
So she has Flare for offense, Repel II for defense, and Quell Flames to get control of fire that gets out of hand.
For her fourth ability...
She could keep Shove/Leap for feats of physical strength, or slot Cure Wounds with some Mana Efficiency, or try Extinguish Force...
She's going to try to slot [Extinguish + Force + Splash Spell + Held Spell]. And that can be... She's not sure. Grease? She really hopes it's Grease, Grease is a killer spell.
She can't fit more than five nodes into an ability graph at this point, sadly. She may have to redesign Quell Flames. Also, she doesn't quite manage Grease with that last combination, instead getting a form of slowing field of intangible stickiness.
She'll drop Held Spell from Quell Flames, it's already sticky.
Okay, so it's the opposite of Grease. Glue. She'll keep it and just rename it.
"So I'm looking at ability builds and I seem to be able to come up with a kind of sticky glue field by using extinguish force with splash. Think it's worth trying, or is things being on fire enough crowd control?"
She laughs and grins a bit dangerously. "Oh that's perfect. We'll have to see how high up it goes, or if you can exempt allies from the stickiness. I think you should be able to. If so, then I can just dance into the flames and slice everyone you've trapped to ribbons."
"Something to try on the practice field, for sure." She grins back and takes another bite of her bread.
"Overall this seems like those goats won't know what hit them."
"Yep!" She pops the last of her breakfast into her mouth, then stands up. "We should get going."
She does not let go of Sin's hand.
