They should really speak more. For one thing, Marian is presumably going home at some point, and he doubts all of the non-magical Healers here are as, well, open-minded and willing to listen to what must sound like a flatly absurd tale as she is.

Leareth is utterly worn out, though, even just after a five-minute Mindspeech conversation. He dozes for much of the afternoon, waking briefly when Marian comes in to turn him. He offers a tired, grateful smile, but doesn't yet have the energy to string words together in Mindspeech. His breathing continues to improve; he's still needing significant support from the ventilator, but his oxygen needs are lower and he's clearing his secretions well despite the discomfort of coughing.

(He's not exactly a servant of the gods. A servant of a god that doesn't exist yet, more like, the god he intends to create. He still doesn't have a very solid read on how Marian will react to that, and isn't sure whether to bring it up, but - if she is sympathetic, then, well, this other world might have a lot of resources to offer. At the very least, it's a possible base of operations, one farther outside the remit of the current, dangerous set of gods than any he's had to work with before.)

It's not until nearly 6 pm that he wakes up properly, and initiates another conversation with Marian.

:There is more I ought tell you.: He takes a steadying breath. :I - our gods are, for the most part, not especially aligned with human interests. They - seem to oppose all technological progress. We have none of -: he makes a vague hand gesture at the monitors and equipment surrounding him. :Our population numbers only in the hundreds of millions. Most people are still subsistence farmers. I have spent my life: many lives, but he's very much not ready to reveal anything about that yet, even to Marian, :- working to change this.

...The gods disapprove. They have - tried to kill me many times. I am almost certain that the unlikely bridge collapse was Their doing.:

Marian listens in silence, stunned by these revelations. Opposing gods that actively try to kill those who work against them. A world centuries behind her own, population only a fraction of its size. Leareth has dropped one bombshell after another on her today.
She takes a deep breath, steadying herself. "That's - a great deal to take in," she says finally. "I can understand why progress might be...difficult, under those circumstances." Putting it mildly. She shakes her head in disbelief. "And the bridge - you really think your gods caused it to collapse, just to kill you?"
Leareth gives a grim nod. :I have little doubt. They are quite willing to take extreme measures when I grow too troublesome.:
Troublesome seems an understatement, for one man daring to stand against malicious gods. Marian's heart aches in sympathy and admiration. "I'm so sorry. That's - terrible, that you have to live in fear of the ones meant to guide and protect." She hesitates. "Is there nothing that can be done?"
:I continue my work, careful as I must be,: he replies. :The people deserve better than the gods currently set over them. As to whether more can be done...: He sighs. :Perhaps. I had thought to establish a sanctuary, a place free of Their influence, in hopes of accelerating progress. Your world seems farther outside Their power than any I have found before.:
Her eyes widen in understanding. "You mean - stay here?" The idea is mad, impossible - and yet, she finds herself seriously considering it. This man has already turned her world upside down; what's one more impossibility? And if his gods truly mean him harm, could she in good conscience send him back?
Leareth gives her a long, measuring look. :It is too much to ask. Forget I said anything; you have already done more than enough in saving my life.:
"No," Marian says suddenly. "I mean - yes, it's still madness. But - I want to help, however I can." She reaches out to grasp his hand, meeting his eyes steadily. "You should stay."
Surprise flickers in his gaze, followed swiftly by gratitude, and something more she can't quite define. :Are you certain?: he asks softly. :There may be dangers you do not foresee...:
"I'm aware of the risks," Marian replies. "And my offer stands." She smiles, heart strangely light in this moment of decision. "Welcome to Earth...mage of another world."
